The Church of St. Teresa in Baghdad (Arabic: كنيسة القدّيسة ترازيا للاتين الكاثوليك) was founded in 1928 and was designed and built by French architect Patrick Burt in Al-Sinak district of Baghdad, Iraq.
History[edit]
Father Pierre al-Karmali, deceased in 1962 AD, bought a large plot of land in the Al-Sinak area in Baghdad, and built it in 1921 AD, so the church was known by his name, and it is also called the Church of Petrie Pierre. 1928, next to it was an orphanage run by Father Pierre himself. There was a school called Al-Natha’a. The church consists of a large hall decorated with traditional inscriptions and religious statues of the Virgin Mary and Jesus and built in the French Gothic style, where the church is considered a masterpiece.
The church was subjected to many abuses by street vendors and shop owners in the area, which led to its closure.
These properties were donated by the Carmelites to the Chaldean Patriarchate in 1966 AD. The Patriarch then took it as his home. The orphans were transferred to the large building that he built in Al-Dora. Al-Nashia School transformed it into Al-Amal High School, which was later closed.. and turned into a monastery for Chaldean Nuns.
Currently the church is closed.[1]
