Stany Nyandwi (born Stanislaw Nyandwi) is a chimpanzee husbandry specialist, based in Uganda and South Africa. For more than 30 years, Stany has worked with chimpanzees in Africa, and across the world. He has primarily worked for the Jane Goodall Institute, and such are his natural abilities to communicate and associated with chimps, his colleagues, including Dr Jane Goodall herself, began to refer to him as the Chimpanzee Whisperer.

Early life[edit]

Stany was born in a small village in the mountains north of the city of Bujumbura in Burundi. One of nine children, his name, 'Nyandwi', means 'born seventh' in the Kirundi language.

Work with chimpanzees[edit]

Stany has worked with chimps in sanctuaries across Africa, commencing at a halfway house sanctuary in Bujumbura which was run by the Jane Goodall Institute before being closed in the mid nineties due to the Burundian Civil War. Stany worked with the evacuated JGI Burundi chimps at Sweetwaters Chimp Sanctuary in Kenya.[1] Stany then moved to Uganda, and began working with chimps at Entebbe Zoo. This work would lead to a long-term chimp carer role at the Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary in Lake Victoria. Stany has also worked for the Jane Goodall Institute as a community educator in the Hoima District of Uganda, working with local people to assist them live harmoniously with chimpanzees. Today, he works as a senior chimp caregiver at the JGI Chimp Eden sanctuary in South Africa.

As well as his chimpanzee work in Africa, Stany has also worked with chimps at zoos and sanctuaries across the globe, including Chimp Haven and Center for Great Apes in the USA.

Books and documentaries[edit]

In 2019, Stany was featured, along with Jane Goodall, in a short documentary film called Pant Hoot[2] which has won multiple awards across the globe.

Stany's biography, The Chimpanzee Whisperer [3] co-written with David Blissett, and with a foreword by Jane Goodall will be released by Skyhorse Publishing in 2022.
