The statue of Althea Gibson was unveiled in Newark, New Jersey in 2012, in honor of Hall of Fame tennis player Althea Gibson. Gibson was the first African-American to win a Grand Slam tournament.[1]
The statue stands outside the Althea Gibson Tennis Center where Gibson coached young players later in life and was added as part of renovations by Essex County Executive, Joe DiVincenzo. Created by sculptor Thomas Jay Warren, it depicts her completing a backhand groundstroke.[2]
