Steel Challenge is a renowned metallurgical competition promoted by World Steel Association , the global Association of Steel Manufacturers, and organized and disseminated by its knowledge and learning partner, Steeluniversity.org.[1]

The competition tests participants' knowledge and skills in steelmaking through realistic simulations of steel production processes. Although the steelChallenge production process has changed over time, it currently consists of an integrated simulator consisting of an EAF Electric arc furnace simulator and a Secondary Steelmaking simulator. In previous editions, especially in the early days of the competition, a single simulator consisting of a Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) was used.

Each edition since 2006, a case study is submitted, for which participants must find a way to manufacture it in the simulators, meeting the requirements set in each of the two simulators. Competitors must find a way to manufacture the steel grade required for the case study, meeting the requirements of temperature, time, CO2 emissions, and chemical composition. Ultimately, the winner is determined by the one that meets the requirements with the lowest final cost per ton.[2]

Steel Challenge is a prestigious competition, which awards not only monetary prizes but also, above all, a great reputation for the contestants and winners in the steel industry.[3]. It also has the support of the main metallurgical institutions, Universities and companies of the participating countries in dissemination. [4] [5] [6]

Over the years, Asians participants and specially China have taken the top positions. In the last years, almost the majority of both categories have been taken by China, with only a few exceptions. Countries like India and Brazil, together with South Korea, have been typically a great competitors in both categories. Europe, on the contrary, have been the weakest region, although is growing and participations like Spain in 2025 confirm that they are growing and achieving the same level.[7] [8] [9]

Competition

Competition is based in two rounds:

  • Regional Championship: participants have 24 hours to complete successful runs using both steelmaking simulators (EAF + Secondary Steelmaking). The Champion of each of the five region in each category will advance to the next round, the World Championship. This round usually takes place on November.
  • World Championship: the five winners of each region and category compete during a few hours in person, in an event carried out together with WorldSteel General meeting, and it usually takes place on April.[10] [11]

Categories

Participants compete in one of two categories:

  • Student Category: for individuals who are enrolled in studies at an accredited academic institution at the time of the registration period.
  • Industry Category: for individuals in steel companies and the steel industry supply chain (the supply chain includes companies who supply the steel industry, who manufacture steel, or are customers of the steel industry). This category has some requirements such as time and chemical composition that are more demanding than the student category ones.

A new category of High School is being developed.

Regions

Each competitor will be placed in one of five global regions:

  • Americas
  • Asia – West
  • Asia – North
  • Asia – East and Oceania
  • Europe and Africa.
