Steel Mage is an English metal band based in Manchester in the United Kingdom. Originally formed by Tommy Verity (Lead Guitar) and Max Neville in 2015. Thomas O'Malley joined in 2018 as the bass player and Louis Chadwick joined in 2019 as rhythm guitarist and lead vocals. In late 2019, Jack Haigh replaced Max Neville on drums. As of 2022, Tommy, Louis, and Max had all left and been further replaced by Joshua Watson, Chloe Cartwright, and Oliver Parkes.

History

Originally using the St. Anthony's Catholic School music room as a base for their practice, they would discuss ideas for original songs and cover Metallica songs alongside such as "For Whom The Bell Tolls" and "Seek And Destroy".

Bassist Thomas O'Malley joined the band shortly after forming a close friendship with Tommy through not only school, but social media. They continued their practice, expanding out of their school's music room, to a local church in Lostock where they were allowed to rehearse in one of the side rooms. Not too long after, following an advert for a rhythm guitarist, Louis Chadwick joined the band. The band began rehearsals at Pirate Studios in Salford.[1] After their second rehearsal, they began to create original songs, including the song 'Warrior'.

After the summer of 2019, Max Neville left the band, then replaced by Jack Haigh, who the band met over social media after an advertisement was put in place for the band needing a new drummer. Jack was also part of the 'Young Drummer of the Year' competition 2020.[2]

They played their first live show on the 11th January 2020 at Pop Hyde in Manchester.[3] Soon after their first gig, the band began to rehearse their original songs so that they could record and release as an EP called "The Uprising Of Hatred". The EP was announced on March 5th, 2020, just after the release of their single "Beatdown", as part of the 'Moshin’ The Roof On' campaign, and released on April 1st of the same year, to moderate critical acclaim.

Influences

After the release of "Uprising of Hatred", review site 'The Razors Edge' stated. As quoted: "I don’t think I’d be unfair to say the influences of Megadeth, Annihilator and Pantera are pretty apparent in the song-writing and playing"[4], most reviews would say the same thing and are correct in terms of influences as a band. However, all members of the band have very different and diverse tastes in music as individuals.

Tommy is very much all about his thrash metal, with the influence of bands like Pantera, Annihilator, and Havok with musicians such as Dimebag Darrel, Reece Scruggs, and Jeff Waters.

Jack is influenced by thrash metal and deathcore bands such as Havok, Annihilator, and Suicide Silence and is influenced by drummers such as Pete Webber, Alex Lopez, and Vinne Paul.

Louis is very influenced by Progressive metal/rock bands, and bands of other subgenres. Bands such as Coheed And Cambria, Trivium, and Lamb Of God are the bands that Louis is influenced by for the most part. Musicians that inspire him the most are people such as Claudio Sanchez, Mark Morton, and Matt Heafy.

As for Tom, his music taste is mainly based around Deathcore and Djent. He is mainly influenced by bands such as Trivium, Jinjer, and Motionless In White. With musician influences such as Paolo Gregoletto, Justin Morrow and Steve Harris from Iron Maiden.
