StepStone GmbH is a German company headquartered in Düsseldorf, North-Rhine Westphalia.[1] It was founded in 1996, went public in year 2000 and was acquired by Axel Springer in 2009.[2][3][4] StepStone operates a global digital recruitment platform.[5][6][7]
History[edit]
In 1994, a Norwegian entrepreneur started a digital alternative to job listings in printed newspapers;[8] it was named Jobshop.[9] Early-stage investors of StepStone included Investor AB and Orkla ASA. The platform grew significantly during the dot-com era,[10] and the company acquired several competitors.[11][12] Preparing for the IPO in March 2000, Jobshop was renamed to StepStone.[13]
The company suffered from the dot-com bubble burst.[14] In 2004, StepStone entered into a strategic partnership with Axel Springer.[15][16] To grow the classifieds business, Springer reached majority ownership of the StepStone Group in 2009.[17][18] Springer took the company private, and moved its headquarters from Oslo to Berlin.[19] Since 2010, the German headquarters have been in Düsseldorf.[20]
In 2012, StepStone acquired Totaljobs based in the United Kingdom.[21] Through the acquisition of Appcast in 2019, a specialized provider of programmatic advertising solutions, the company entered the United States.[22] In 2021, StepStone also acquired the conversational AI technology of Mya.[23] Over the years, Springer invested millions in building the StepStone brand.[24][25][26]
Operations[edit]
StepStone is a private limited company (Gesellschaft mit beschränkter Haftung, GmbH), currently owned 100% by Axel Springer. The leadership team includes Sebastian Dettmers (CEO), Thorsten Otte (CFO), and Wolfgang Bruhn (CDO).
The portfolio includes more than 40 job platforms in 20 countries under several brands. StepStone is active in market research, too.[27][28] It has been in the education technology sector,[29] and operates meinestadt.de, a community platform for all cities in Germany.[30]
