Stephen Jo Bladd (born July 13, 1942) is a retired American drummer and percussionist best-known as a member of The J. Geils Band.
Early life[edit]
Stephen Jo Bladd was born on July 13, 1942 in Boston, Massachusetts. [1]
Musical career[edit]
While a student at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts in 1964, he began playing in The Hallucinations with singer Peter Wolf, Paul Shapiro (guitar), Doug Slade (guitar), and Joe Clark (bass). They performed at nightclubs in the Combat Zone area of Boston and developed a large following as one of the first bands to play at the Boston Tea Party. During this time, they appeared on bills with The Velvet Underground, Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters, Van Morrison, John Lee Hooker, and Sun Ra.[2]
When J. Geils, Danny Klein, and Richard Salwitz moved to Boston from Worcester with their acoustic blues trio, the group went electric and teamed up with Bladd and Wolf to become The J. Geils Band. Loyal fan Seth Justman later came on board to play the keys. Bladd was a member of the band from 1968-1985 and also performed for a reunion show in 2006.[3]
