He attended Lake Forest High School until he graduated in 1984. Platcow then received a bachelor’s degree in Organizational Communications from Arizona State University.

Advertising career[edit]

As an Account Executive at Foote, Cone & Belding/Los Angeles, Nahser Advertising and others, Platcow’s worked on blue chip clients like General Motors, Farmers Insurance, Bang & Olufsen and Schwinn Bicycle Company to name a few. After moving back to Chicago, he met a few like-minded advertising professionals and founded his own agency: Rodi, Platcow, Malin Advertising, Inc. on April Fool’s Day, 1994.[3]

By the early 2000s, RPM had become one of the top 25 privately-held advertising companies in Chicago with a growing roster of coveted clients including Horseshoe Casino, the Daily Herald (Arlington Heights), White Hen Pantry, Field Museum of Natural History and Hertz Car Sales. Current clients include Boyd Gaming, Fields Automotive Group, Pinnacle Entertainment, Saratoga Casino Hotel, Terlato Wines International and Seneca Nation.

Platcow is currently chief executive officer of RPM Advertising, Inc. which is headquartered in Chicago.

In addition to his advertising duties with RPM, Platcow served as executive producer of the highly acclaimed documentary film, “Not Yet Begun to Fight” released in 2011[4]. Directed by Shasta Grenier and Sabrina Lee, the film chronicles the struggles of wounded war veterans trying to heal through the simple act of fly-fishing.

Since its opening in 2012 through various film festivals across the country, “Not Yet Begun to Fight” has garnered considerable attention from critics and the press including The New York Times[5], the Hollywood Reporter[6], and most notably the Sun-Times’ Roger Ebert [7] who gave it two thumbs up. In addition, Ebert chose it for an exclusive slot in his annual film festival just before his passing[8]. After appearing in theaters, the film had its broadcast premiere on PBS nationwide beginning on November 11, 2013[9]. The film has won many awards including the Audience Award at the Florida Film Festival (2012[10]), the Moving Mountains Award at Mountainfilm Telluride (2012)[11], the Audience Award at the San Diego Film Festival (2012),[12] the Big Sky Award at the Big Sky Film Festival (2013)[13] and the Hero Award at the My Hero Film Festival (2012). It was chosen as Official Selection at the following film festivals: Ebertfest (2013)[14], Red Rock Film Festival (2012)[15], Atlanta Film Festival (2012) [16]and Wild and Scenic Film Festival (2013)[17]. "Not Yet Begun to Fight" was also nominated for three Northwest Emmy Awards (2014)[18]. The film was nominated for Documentary in the Topical category.  Directors Sabrina Lee and Shasta Grenier were nominated for Director in the Post Production category.

Platcow’s advertising agency is credited on the film with Media Production[19].

In June of 2014, Platcow opened up a high end steakhouse called PM Prime on Chicago's North Shore in the suburb of Highwood. [20] The restaurant gained a great deal of media exposure surrounding it's elaborate aviation-themed decor[21]. The restaurant featured the creations of award-winning chef Dominick Zumpano.[22] The restaurant also garnered media attention surrounding it's supper club events that were inspired by AMC's hit show Madmen.[23]

Platcow serves as a board member for the Chicago Public Library Foundation and for the Illinois Chapter of the March of Dimes. Platcow is an avid aviator [24] and has earned a Multi-engine Commercial Pilot’s License from Airline Transport Professionals.
