Hector Mujica is an American philanthropic and business executive, and a Democratic political candidate. He has held leadership roles in corporate philanthropy at Google.org and declared his candidacy for the 2026 United States Senate special election in Florida.[1]

Early life and education

Mujica was born in the United States after his parents immigrated from Venezuela. He is a Venezuelan-American who was raised in South Florida, where his father served as a pastor.[2][3]

Mujica attended Florida public schools. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in International Business from Florida International University.[4][5] He later obtained a Professional Certificate in Social Entrepreneurship from the Stanford Graduate School of Business and a Master of Public Policy (MPP) from the Goldman School of Public Policy at the University of California, Berkeley.[6][5]

Career

Prior to his work in corporate philanthropy, Mujica's career included various roles in both the public and private sectors. He worked in investment banking at Oppenheimer & Co. and served in the office of U.S. Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz.[6] He also gained diplomatic experience as a fellow in the Economic Section at the U.S. Department of State, including a posting at the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo.[4]

Google.org

Mujica spent several years in leadership positions at Google.org, the philanthropic arm of Google. He served as the Regional Manager for Google.org's programs in Canada, Latin America, and with the U.S. Hispanic community, and later held the role of Head of Americas Philanthropy.[6][7][8] His work focused on economic opportunity and access to jobs.[8]

As the Head of Americas Philanthropy, he oversaw a grantmaking portfolio reported to be over **$100 million** (with the stated goal of directing nearly $1 billion into related programs) for initiatives focused on workforce training, small-business growth, and disaster recovery.[4][7] His work supported programs that aided veterans in re-entering the workforce, created tech apprenticeships, and provided disaster relief, including a $12 million investment to help 200,000 people in Latin America gain digital skills.[7] While at Google, he also co-founded HOLA, the company's Hispanic employee resource group.[2]
