Steve Antonelli is an assistant coach for the Parramatta Eels in the NRL and is a former Australian professional rugby league footballer who played Wing and Centre for the Penrith Panthers.

Playing Career[edit]

Antonelli played Rugby Union, making the Australian Schoolboys side. In 1985, he crossed codes to Rugby League signing with the Penrith Panthers. In Round 17 1985, Antonelli made his First Grade debut for Penrith against the Illawarra Steelers at Win Stadium in Wollongong.

Antonelli went on to play 5 games in 1985, scoring 1 try. Also representing both under 18's NSW and City Origin teams. Antonelli was at Penrith until 1987, not making another appearance. in 1988, Antonelli signed with the Western Suburbs Magpies but did not appear for them in First Grade. In 1991, Antonelli left Western Suburbs and retired.[1]

Coaching Career[edit]

In 2013, Antonelli was hired to be the head coach of Mount Pritchard Mounties in NSW cup competition. Antonelli in five seasons led Mounties to four finals appearances, including three top 4 finishes. Also collecting two minor premierships. Antonelli led Mounties to the 2016 NSW cup Grand Final, losing to the Illawarra Cutters 21-20. Antonelli was also an assistant coach under Ricky Stuart at the Canberra Raiders from 2014 to 2017 while also coaching NSW Cup.

In 2018, Antonelli signed with the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs to be their assistant coach under head coach Dean Pay. Antonelli was at Canterbury until 2020 when Pay was sacked.

In 2021, Antonelli signed with the South Sydney Rabbitohs to be their NSW cup head coach, as well an assistant under head coach Wayne Bennett and Jason Demetriou in 2022. The 2021 season Souths had only won 2 games out of 11 before the competition was cancelled due to the Coronavirus outbreak. In 2022, Antonelli led Souths to a mid table finish missing out on finals.

Antonelli was announced as an assistant coach for the Parramatta Eels for the 2023 season, under head coach Brad Arthur.
