Steve Cunningham (born 1949 in Houston, Texas, United States) is an American musician best known as the original bassist of the avant-rock band Red Krayola.

Steve Cunningham was born in Houston, Texas and went to the Strake Jesuit College Preparatory, studied at the University of St. Thomas, Universität Heidelberg, University of Houston, Uni Wien and Uni Siegen. From 1965-1966 he worked at the "la maison du cafe". He joined Red Krayola in 1966 at the age of 17 with friends Bonnie Emerson and Danny Schact.[1] He currently lives in Wimberley, Texas and works as a technical Writer for Robert Bosch GmbH.

In 1966 before joining Red Krayola he played on the psychedelic album "Holy Music" by Malachi.
He performed on the albums The Parable of Arable Land (1967), Coconut Hotel (recorded in 1967 - released in 1995), God Bless the Red Krayola and All Who Sail With It (1968) and Fingerpainting (1999).
