Steve Loverso (born 14 July 1984 in the United States) is an American former soccer player. A left-footed footballer, he was comfortable playing up front, in midfield, or defense during his playing days.[3]
Career[edit]
High school and college[edit]
Competing for Warwick Valley High School, Loverso was known for his disciplined approach to soccer[4] and was praised by the coach for his efforts in training;[4] he was selected for the All-State squad as a midfielder during his junior season.[3] Aged 16, he went to Trinidad and Tobago for two weeks, practicing with former Trinidadian international Brian Williams and Jheri Vidale, whom he stayed with there.[4] Two TT Pro League outfits, W Connection and United Petrotrin, offered to place Loverso in their under-20 teams as well.[4]
Getting a soccer scholarship at Rutgers University,[5] the American traveled to Italy for 10 days and took part in a youth tournament, facing sides with a more aggressive style of play than the American teams Loverso played for.[5] For Rutgers University, Loverso scored his first goal in a 1-0 triumph over Seton Hall in September 2002.[6]
Senior[edit]
Trying out for Falkirk F.C. of the Scottish Premier League in 2004, the forward netted his first goal for the club in a 1-0 friendly win over Chester-le-Street.[7] Unfortunately, Falkirk did not have the prerequisite funds to add him to their squad,[8] and he signed for Larne F.C. instead, whereafter scoring three goals against Donegal Celtic.[9] Picking up a concussion in the middle of a game, the attacker flew back to the United States to renew his visa and visit family.[10] Soon, in 2006, Loverso transferred to Cwmbran Town A.F.C. of the Welsh Premier League and went through another trial with Falkirk, returning in September,[11] making 13 appearances and 3 goals within two seasons and leaving by the end of the year.[12]
His last club was Tobago United F.C. which he plied his trade for in 2008.
