Steve Wymer (born 1977) is an American business and nonprofit executive, political advisor, board member, and investor currently serving as President and CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs in Silicon Valley.[1] He has also held executive roles at companies such as TiVo, Nextdoor, and eBay. He is the founder of the Silicon Valley Africa Alliance and active in a variety of community leadership roles.[2][3]
Early Life
Steve Wymer was born in 1977 in Bremerton, Washington, to Dan and Judy Wymer. His father, a small-town Baptist minister, served in ministry for over 40 years. Steve grew up alongside his two brothers: Matthew, an infrastructure contractor working in Puerto Rico, and Thomas, a Navy veteran and volunteer EMT.
Education
Steve Wymer attended Washington State University, where he earned a degree in Communication with a minor in Leadership. Notably, he is the only known individual to have served three terms as student body president at a major university. During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in the design, construction, and opening of a $40 million student recreation center at WSU, which significantly enhanced campus life.[4]Wymer cut the ribbon at the center’s grand opening in the weeks prior to his graduation in 2001.
In 2008, Steve Wymer furthered his education at Harvard University, completing a professional certification in Business and Political Negotiations.
Career
Steve Wymer has held a variety of leadership roles across public, private, and non-profit sectors. He spent nearly a decade as a spokesperson and advisor to four United States Senators in Washington, D.C. During his tenure in the Senate, he also collaborated with the U.S. Department of State, working in Africa and Eastern Europe to train media professionals and elected officials on building and sustaining a vibrant press. In 2010, Wymer was elected President of the U.S. Senate Press Secretaries Association, the only bipartisan press organization in Congress.
In 2011, Steve Wymer left Washington to relocate to Silicon Valley, where he led communications and corporate affairs at TiVo. After nearly five years at TiVo, he joined Nextdoor.com as head of communications and policy for three years, before becoming eBay's Chief Communications Officer and Chair of the eBay Foundation in 2019.
Steve Wymer has been a prominent figure in the San Jose community. From 2014 to 2016, he served as an appointee to the Board of Directors for "Work2Future," a city organization supporting job resources for the unemployed. In 2016, he was awarded the Silicon Valley Leadership Group’s "Community Leader of the Year" award, and in 2018, CreaTV recognized him with the Leigh Weimers’ Award for his contributions as a trusted advisor.[5]
From 2015 to 2021, Wymer chaired the Finance Committee of Team San Jose, an economic development organization that manages the San Jose McEnery Convention Center complex and several historic downtown theaters.[6] In early 2024, he helped forman exploratory group to launch an annual three-on-three basketball tournament in downtown San Jose, set to debut in the summer of 2025 to benefit Silicon Valley community organizations.
After an initial trip to East Africa in 2005 on behalf of the US Department of State while serving as a staff member in the U.S. Senate, Wymer made multiple trips leading training sessions across Africa related to democracy initiatives, the development of a thriving free press, and political activism. Since 2018, Wymer has mentored a variety of African founders and entrepreneurs, serving as an advisor to Renew Capital and investing across multiple sectors. In 2024, Wymer founded the Silicon Valley Africa Alliance in support of connecting Valley technology leaders with African entrepreneurs.
Since 2020, Wymer has served as the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Silicon Valley.
Personal Life
Steve Wymer is married to Michele, a partner at a D.C. lobbying firm where she represents philanthropic organizations and faith-based charities. Michele also serves as Vice Chair of the Special Olympics of Northern California, a cause close to their hearts due to their daughter Joy. The couple has four children and lives in San Jose, California where they are active in the Special Olympics, Venture Christian Church, and numerous youth sports and activities.
