Political Career

Jones was elected city councilman of Garden Grove in 2006 and served for 10 years prior to becoming the 18th Mayor of Garden Grove in 2016.[7][8]

In 2016, while Jones was a candidate for Mayor, he received a $58,000 donation from Great Wolf Lodge Waterpark, a local water park in Garden Grove. Residents of Garden Grove questioned the ethics of the donation due to the amount, however the city does not have a limit on single contributions by a donor to political campaigns.[9][10]

Steve Jones won 84.4% of the vote in a landslide victory over Donald Taylor in the 2018 elections to retain the Mayoral seat.[11]

In 2019 Jones along with Councilwoman Kim Nguyen and Hu-Ha Nguyen, voted in favor of flying the Gay Pride flag during pride month at Garden Grove City Hall. However no flag was flown due to Councilwoman Stephanie Klopfenstein being absent during the 3–3 vote.[12]

In 2020, Jones and the Orange Country Transportation Authority announced a fleet of plug-in electric buses. The fleet includes 10 plug-in buses that are a predecessor to the 10 hydrogen buses which launched in January 2020. The program serves as a pilot program to encourage fuel efficient and environmentally friendly transportation options in Orange County.[13][14][15]

In April 2020, Jones publicly responded to the Covid-19 crisis' impact on small businesses in Garden Grove by announcing new small business relief loans.[16]

Social Issues

Jones supports same-sex marriage and in 2019 voted in favor of flying the Gay Pride flag at Garden Grove City Hall during LGBT Pride Month.[17]

Jones is a supporter of the Vietnamese community in Garden Grove and has participated in Tet festival events hosted by the city.[18] In 2017, Jones approved the renaming of Bushard and Bolsa boulevard in Westminster which borders Garden Grove to "Tran Hung Dao Boulevard" to harmonize with the Little Saigon community. The name change provided a clear distinction between the boundaries of Westminster and Garden Grove.[19]

On September 16, 2020 Jones alongside Mayor Harry Sidhu publicly pressed California Governor Gavin Newsom to reopen Disneyland and Knott's Berry Farm despite the COVID-19 pandemic. Jones cited the economic well-being of Garden Grove as a major reason for pressing for reopening. [20]
