Stevie Helps is an English Actor, Playwright and Director from Welling, London.
Early Life[edit]
Stevie was born in South East London, England. He was raised with four brothers and two sisters.[1] After training at the Miskin Theatre, North Kent College, Helps went on to study Theatre at York St John University and the University of Salford.[1]
Acting Career[edit]
After his training, Helps moved to Manchester where he began acting in Television, appearing in episodes of Heartbeat (British TV series) and Fresh Meat (TV series).[1]
Directing Career[edit]
In 2014, Helps directed The Beast Within at the Manchester Theatre Showcase, winning an Award.[2][3] In 2014, Helps co-launched the Manchester Hub Drama School in Manchester where he continues to work as an Acting Coach.[4] Helps' other Directorial projects include 'Damaged Goods' (2014 & 2016), 'Spook Manor' (2017) and 'Red Circles' (2019).[4]
Playwright[edit]
He went on to join the team at New Live Theatre Company in 2014 as Co-Artistic Director and began his career as a playwright. Several of his plays have premiered at The Lowry[5][6] In 2015, Helps wrote his debut play called 'Dragged Up', which was produced at the Eagle Inn Theatre in Salford.[7] The play marked the beginning of his outspoken advocacy for mental health rights.[8] Helps continued to develop his production which appeared under the titles 'Borderline Electra' at Hope Mill Theatre in 2016, 'Mind's A Labyrinth' and 'Happy Mind's Hospital', before Helps settled with the title 'RACHEL', a version of which was later produced at The Lowry with James Cartmell playing the role of the Mind in 2018.[9]. Helps went on to write and premier two further plays at The Lowry, 'The Betting Shop' in 2019[10] and 'SARAH' in 2020.[11]
