Stobotnik
Stobotnik[2] is a popular ship in slash fiction between Agent Stone and Doctor Ivo Robotnik, two fictional characters from the Sonic the Hedgehog film franchise. Stobotnik is a portmanteau of "Stone" and "Robotnik".
Background
Agent Stone and Doctor Robotnik[lower-alpha 1] both first appeared in Sonic the Hedgehog (2020). Both are antagonists who have appeared in all of the films in the franchise. Robotnik is a mad scientist looking to rule humanity, and Stone is Robotnik's assistant and sidekick looking to aid him in his goals. The two are in a seemingly toxic relationship from the start, but their relationship seems to strengthen over the course of the films.[2]
After Robotnik being banished to the Mushroom Planet in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022), Stone becomes a barista at the Mean Bean Coffee Shop, down about his disappearance.[3] However, when he hears the news of his return, he is immediately excited about it.[3] In Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024), Robotnik revealed how he truly felt about Stone prior to the Eclipse Cannon's explosion.[4]
Stone was originally going to have a minor role in the first film, but Jim Carrey's improvisation turned Stone into a sycophant subordinate to Robotnik.[3][5][6]
History
After the release of Sonic the Hedgehog (2020), Agent Stone was well-received by the Sonic fandom and was immediately shipped with Doctor Robotnik, inspiring fan art and fan fictions.[3][5][7][8][9]
Response
Lee Majdoub, who portrays Agent Stone in the films, has positively acknowledged the shipping and encourages it.[5][9][10] Furthermore, Jim Carrey, who portrays Doctor Robotnik in the films, acknowledges the fact that there may be something going on between the two characters.[5][10]
