Stop Child Abuse and Neglect
- This article is about the agency SCAN Inc., based in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Not to be confused with "Stop Child Abuse Now", or with "Serving Children and Adults in Need".
Stop Child Abuse and Neglect, better known as SCAN, is a not-for-profit organization which serves the northeastern region of Indiana. SCAN Inc. is a 501(c)(3) charity[1] focused on the prevention of child abuse and elimination of cruelty to children. The stated purpose of the organization is: "SCAN protects children, prepares parents, strengthens families and educates our community to Stop Child Abuse and Neglect."
According to SCAN's 2019 report, the organization served 12,000 children and families, in 35 counties in Indiana.[2] Though, it has been reported that more than 15,000 parents and children of more than 5,600 families have benefited per year.[3]
History and involvement[edit]
It was incorporated in 1976 in Indiana, and it is based in Fort Wayne; it serves over 30 counties in the Hoosier State, including Allen County and Huntington County. [a]. The digital magazine BusinessPeople reported that in 2018 the agency served well over seventeen-thousand individuals.[4], and as of January 2020, and according to GuideStar[5], the charitable organization demonstrates transparency.
Several court cases have involved SCAN INC, and in 2004, SCAN's work from its "Parent and Partners" program was part of a case in front of Indiana's Supreme Court.[6]
The organization is supported by the government of Indiana and recognizes it as a provider of counseling, diagnostic and evaluation services. Also, through the Indiana Department of Child Services, SCAN is acknowledged as a provider of Father Engagement Services.[7]
In 2005, Indiana University recognized SCAN's work on abuse prevention and family restoration and awarded its Social Enterprise Award of Distinction. [8]
In addition, the organization receives individual donations and the support of the community. In 2012 and 2013, Saint Joseph Community Health Foundation extended its support for medical transportation, and from 2015 through 2017 the foundation supported the work of therapists providing clinical services.[9] In 2016 the Community Foundation of Greater Fort Wayne Inc. reported support for SCAN's operations.[10]
Duck race[edit]
Also, as a way to support the efforts and promote their mission, every year a duck race is organized[11], during which numerous sponsored rubber ducks are thrown in one of the rivers during the Johnny Appleseed Festival.[12] In 2016, there were thousands of plastic ducks in the race.[13] The event has taken place for over thirty years. The 31st time it took place, it broke its own record.[14] The 32nd race was planned to take place on June 13, 2020, at Fort Wayne's new Promenade Park[15]; however, the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic made it necessary to postpone the in-person event and was rescheduled for August 30, 2020, with the winner to be announced virtually[16][17]
During COVID-19 pandemic[edit]
The Fort Wayne News Organization WANE-15 reported that according to Indiana Department of Child Services, in 2020, there were about 100 fewer calls to the reporting hotline in comparison to 2018 and 2019; during those years there were approximately 700 calls each day during the workweek[18]
