Storylines of Shortland Street

This article details the various storylines that have occurred on the TVNZ soap opera Shortland Street since its debut on 25 May 1992. The article also documents the list of births, marriages and deaths in the show.

Cliffhangers[edit]

The annual Shortland Street cliffhanger is a storyline at the end of the year's season, often a crisis, that leaves behind a question to be answered the following year. This technique is used to lure viewers back after the long break. Cliffhangers are usually carefully written as so storylines from throughout the year finally interconnect and come to a head.

Billy Whitley-McCaskill	8 August 2018	Harper Whitley	Drew McCaskill	While Harper was relaxing in the hot tub at her home, she suffered a labour contraction, so she asked Drew and Boyd for help. Minutes before Drew arrived home, she had given birth to a baby named Billy, who is an intersex child, thanks to the help of Boyd Rolleston. Billy is Shortland Street's first ever intersex character for the first 26 years of the soap opera show. It is unknown whether Billy Whitley-McCaskill is actually a boy or a girl or even both genders born with both male and female genitals. Billy Whitley-McCaskill is played by actor Arlo Jackson.
Faith	9 August 2019	Jennifer	Brandon	While in ED, Jen suffered a cardiac arrest due to complications with lung cancer, and also went into labour. She died just as the baby came out, Kylie convinces Brandon to name the baby "Faith" because of their faith in God. Kylie also made a promise to Jen, for her and Daniel Reinhart to be the godparents of Faith. Brandon tells Kylie that her and Dan are responsible to look after the baby for the rest of their life as he is emigrating to Papua New Guinea to do a mission for their church.
Amelie Warner	19 December 2019	Tess Hutchinson	Phoenix Warner	After Phoenix kept hiding secrets about the money for the necklace he bought her, Phoenix leaves to go to work. A few hours later, Tess has a contraction and was rushed to hospital. Phoenix and Chris made it to resus just in time for the baby to come out, and the baby was delivered by TK and Kylie

Tom Neilson	11 November 1993	Heart attack	Tom had mysteriously disappeared that year but returned wanting a kidney transplant. Unfortunately, after the transplant Tom died of a heart attack
Jean-Luc Mafart	25 December 1993	Fell to death	Alison had married him overseas and returned after he had turned out to be abusive. They had a fight on a rooftop and he eventually fell to his death when pushed by Alison. Darryl Neilson helped Alison to cover up the crime.
Damon McEwon	9 February 1994	Pneumonia	Damon was an AIDS sufferer and close friend of Jamie Forrest. After collapsing, he contracted pneumonia. Jonathan McKenna was with him on his deathbed.
Nurse Steve Mills	25 March 1994	Car accident	Died in the explosion of a vehicle he crashed after a heated argument with Chris Warner while driving. He initially survived the crash but was killed when he went back to the overturned vehicle to rescue Talita Pahele (TP) Aleni and it exploded.

Tina Twentyman	March 1995	Post op complications.	Actress who had received breast implants which then became infected. Died due to faulty drugs provided by Darryl's Pharm-Ex company.
Darryl Neilson	21 March 1995	Drowning	Drowned after falling from the boat 'The Toroa' after attempting to murder Kirsty Knight.
Richard Thornton	October 1995	Broken neck	Richard broke his neck falling off the roof of the Thornton residence while trying to repair a TV antenna on a night of heavy rain after drinking heavily.
Rima Wellington	23 October 1995	Internal Haemorrhage	Rima was a child with cancer who died due to the side effects of a trial medication with Dr. Finlay Keats.

She was pregnant at the time and later died in hospital. Her baby miraculously survived and was born via C section before Tiffany's life support was switched off.

Nurse Meg Harris	13 August 2007	Strangled	Naked body found in a rubbish skip outside The I.V.. Murdered by Joey Henderson, aka The Ferndale Strangler, on the night of Mark Weston's birthday party.
Jay Copeland	27 August 2007	Strangled	Naked body found in the bush close to the hospital. Murdered by Joey Henderson, aka The Ferndale Strangler, as he was uncomfortable with her sexuality.
Nurse Beth Wilson	28 September 2007	Strangled	Body found (off-screen) a week after being abducted from her home. Murdered by Joey Henderson, aka The Ferndale Strangler, as to him, it was assumed that she was stringing orderly Steve Roberts along. Her attack on Joey was also the reason for her death.
Nurse Brenda Holloway	31 October 2007	Cardiac arrest resulting from a lethal injection	Injected with suxamethonium by a person disguised in a Halloween mask. Murdered by Joey Henderson, aka The Ferndale Strangler, while he was preventing her from exposing him as the person responsible for several recent cardiac arrests at the hospital.
Nurse Joey Henderson	5 March 2008	Fall	Jumped off the roof of an inner-city storage unit building to avoid capture when being cornered by Detective Lara Wade and police. Revealed to be The Ferndale Strangler.
Nurse Toni Warner	12 June 2008	Cardiac arrest caused by renal failure	Died of cardiac arrest caused by renal failure due a faulty drug distributed by the dodgy pharmaceutical company Scott Spear.

Nurse Shanti Kumari-Scott	19 October 2009	Ectopic Pregnancy.	When Oliver Ritchie accidentally infected her with dengue fever, it masked the symptoms of the ectopic pregnancy which ultimately caused her death.
Nurse Alison Raynor	12 November 2009	Drowned	Chris Warner was informed in August 2010 that his ex-wife Allie had drowned in a yachting accident and that she had had his child in 1996.
Don Lennox	10 December 2009	Died of injuries as result of gunshot to chest.	Brought into hospital under false identity and operated on by Chris Warner who identified him as the killer of Craig Valentine.
Nurse Morgan Braithwaite	18 December 2009	Hit and run	Kieran Mitchell accidentally ran her over and framed a drunk Rachel McKenna by putting her in the driver's seat.
Heather Sloane	12 February 2010	Cancer operation	Ben Goodall's ex lover. Died on the operating table due to cancer.

Nurse Jill Kingsbury	16 January 2012	Stabbed	While trying to stop Hunter from robbing a pharmacy, Jill ended up accidentally getting stabbed by a security guard and later died in hospital.
Hayley O'Neill	21 May 2012	Bludgeoned	Beaten with a plank by her abusive boyfriend Drew in the show's 20th anniversary. Chris ended up getting arrested for her murder.

Dr. Luke Durville	30 January 2013	Brain tumor	Died from a brain bleed resulting from his month-long diagnosis of a brain tumor. His death came only a day after celebrating his life with an early funeral.
Travis Corfield	11 December 2013	Hit and run	Vasa's abusive ex fiance; mysteriously found dead in her apartments carpark. It later turned out he had been murdered by Bree Hamilton.

Nurse Effie Sommers	7 July 2014	Mystery illness	Died as a result of a deadly illness spreading rapidly throughout Ferndale.
Dr. Sarah Potts	18 August 2014	Mystery illness	Sarah contracted a mystery illness whilst investigating a cure for the rapidly growing epidemic. She died with fiance, TK Samuels at her side.
Caleb Potene	20 July 2015	Propofol overdose	Whilst hospitalised after a diazepam overdose, Caleb was murdered by his wife Pania Stevens when she injected propofol so no one would find out about her attempted murder.
Pixie Hannah	19 August 2015	Pneumonia	Fourteen-year-old Pixie developed pneumonia as a result of chemotherapy-induced immunosuppression, having recently overcome a Ewing's sarcoma in her right femur. She didn't respond well to antibiotics and died after entering cardiac arrest.
Len Cooper	14 December 2015	Fatal Gunshot Wound	Caught in a hostage crisis inside the hospital cafeteria, he was shot at point blank by gunman Gareth Hutchins. Medical attention was not able to be administered until it was too late.
Gareth Hutchins	18 January 2016	Fatal Gunshot Wound	Shot by the Armed Offenders Squad after attempting to escape the Hospital Cafeteria.
Nurse Wendy Cooper	19 January 2016	Fatal Gunshot Wound	Suffered a stroke after being shot by gunman Gareth Hutchins, leading to Brain death. After a day on life support, long time husband Murray Cooper decided to let her life support be turned off.
Norelle Brown	18 April 2016	Suicide - overdose	After suffering with cancer for a few months, her daughter, Nurse Kylie Brown let Norelle take her own life after suffering unbearable pain when the cancer spread.
Dr. Victoria Anderton	5 July 2016	Wounds sustained from a car crash	Victoria went through the windscreen of her car in an attempt to flee from Ferndale. She later died in the Ambulance on the way back to Shortland Street Hospital.
Howard Black	7 December 2016	Supposed drowning	Wife Leanne Black, after returning to Ferndale following their Honeymoon, discovered soon after that he had fallen overboard on a cruise ship.
Trina Duncan	19 December 2016	Beaten up by Hayden Crowhurst	Beaten by Hayden when he discovered that she was in love with TK Samuels. She survived the beating, but later died in hospital.
Hayden Crowhurst	16 January 2017	Drowned	TK Samuels drowned Hayden in self defense, after Hayden had kidnapped Nurse Kylie Brown.
Glen Rickman	16 January 2017	Car explosion	Glen was ran off the road, his car doused in petrol and set on fire by DI Brent Cochrane, while his daughter Lucy Rickman-Karim watched on in horror.
DI Brent Cochrane	30 January 2017	Murdered by Mason Coutts' associates	Killed off-screen as ordered by Mason Coutts, after it was discovered he was a corrupt cop, revealing Mason to be the boss of Brent, Glen and Hayden.
George Bentley	23 May 2017	Strangulation	Murdered by one of Mason Coutts' thugs hiding in the back seat of Mason's car, due to being a loose end in Brent Cochrane's murder.
Lizzie Elliott	25 May 2017	Strangulation	Murdered by Mason Coutts after attempting to take his wife's place in their escape from Ferndale, during the Volcanic Eruption.
Marjorie Brasch	25 May 2017	Aortic aneurysm	The show's Original Receptionist, Marjorie died quietly in the Hospitals reception, while helping with the victims of the Ferndale Volcanic Eruption.
Nurse Lucy Rickman-Karim	29 May 2017	Complications from Childbirth	After giving birth during the Ferndale Volcanic Eruption, Lucy suffered postnatal internal bleeding, and required a hysterectomy. After a successful operation however, she had a Cardiac Arrest, and died in the recovery room.
Robin Greaves	19 July 2017	Cardiac arrest	Committed suicide due to many people thinking he was stealing corpses from the morgue in Shortland Street hospital.
Ashley Whitley	29 August 2017	Brain Bleed	Ashley was pushed by during a fight with Olive Kirkbride, and after being knocked unconscious, she was declared brain dead later in hospital.
Jane Hawkins	18 September 2017	Heart Failure	Recipient of Ashley's heart, she later had problems with the transplant and suffered a cardiac arrest.
Tommy Wilson	7 November 2017	Stabbed to death	Tommy was attacked with a knife by his estranged father Gregor Wilson at his family home. He later died in hospital with major injuries.
Jasper Coutts	18 December 2017	Cranial Trauma	Suffered a fatal head wound as he attempted to stop his father, Mason Coutts from drowning Sass Warner, and later died of the injury in his father's arms.
Mason Coutts	18 December 2017	Shot by aHarpoon gun	Shot through the heart by a Harpoon gun, by Sass Warner, in revenge for all of Mason's actions.
Dion Tai	22 March 2018	Cancer	Shortly into the relationship Dion began having health problems and was devastatingly diagnosed with terminal cancer. He retired from sport and despite initial hesitation, allowed Jack to nurse him; eventually dying in his arms.
Hope and including all of the other "Followers of the Light" cult members	11 April 2018	Suicide due to cyanide poisoning	Hope Whakapono, who was Ezra Whakapono's girlfriend, had committed suicide alongside 16 other members of the "Followers of the Light" cult due to lethal and fatal poisoning by drinking a poisonous and toxic chemical called cyanide.
Julia Reinhart	5 June 2018	Seizure resulting from a car accident	While Julia and Dylan were going on a car trip in a blue car, she was murdered by her husband Dylan Reinhart who undid her seatbelt moments before deliberately crashing into a tree.
Sergeant Clint Allen	4 July 2018	Brutally beaten to death	Sergeant Clint Allen, who raped Kate Hannah, Mo Hannah's wife and Zoe Carlson's sister, was savagely and brutally beaten to death by both Curtis Hannah and Mo Hannah, (presumably) who was revealed to be the serial rapist of Ferndale. The rapist later turned out to be Ian Reid aka The Beachwood Beast.
Miranda Reinhart	September	Overdose	Murdered by Dylan Reinhart.
Kawe Osbourne	25 September 2018	Head injury or severe brain bleed due to a fall from a balcony	Knowing that Esther had terminal heart failure, he proposed and married her on 23 September. However, he was killed on 25 September as Trevor and his associates threw him off the balcony of the hotel, with Esther suffering a cardiac arrest from the shock. Trevor died the day after at the operating table due to brain damage. Te Rongopai tried to donate Kawe's heart to Esther as his dying wish, which is both unethical and illegal under Commonwealth laws.
Robert Humphries	17 December 2018	Injuries from plane crash	Robert, the pilot to the plane carrying Chris Warner, Mo Hannah, Kate Nathan and Jack Hannah, along with separately travelling Denise Fendley, suffered a heart attack whilst flying the aircraft. Chris tries to land the plane, but Rob awakens, causing Chris to lose control, and subsequently crash the plane. Afterwards, despite Chris and Denise's efforts, Rob's injuries prove fatal.
Ian Reid	17 December 2018	Murdered	Convicted rapist Ian was admitted into hospital after being stabbed in prison. His nurse, and victim, Clare Sullivan, struggles to treat him, and ends up attacking him in rage. During a blackout at the hospital, a hooded figure, presumably Kylie Brown by the dark hood and grey sweatpants she is seen later wearing, entered Ian's room and killed him by pulling his stitches.
Dylan Reinhart	17 December 2018	Suffocated by Kylie Brown	Whilst trying to kill new wife Kylie in a car accident, mirroring his previous victims, Dylan himself bore the worst of the injuries. Trapped, the car catches alight, and he himself catches fire. He escapes, and is brought into hospital with deep dermal burns to 40% of his body. Whilst recovering, he finally admits to the murders of Stephanie, Miranda and Julia to Boyd Rolleston and Kylie, leaving her distraught and dashing from the room in a state. She later reenters, and, alone with Dylan, kisses him. He declares her as perfect, to which she responds saying she isn't perfect, before climbing on the bed and suffocating him to death.
Mo Hannah	17 December 2018	Injuries from plane crash	In the plane crash, Mo's son Jack Hannah is left with serious injuries, primarily a broken leg. Other passengers Chris Warner, Kate Nathan, Denise Fendley and himself have minor injuries; pilot Rob Humphries was already fatally injured. Mo goes looking for a road that Chris claims to have seen, brushing off Kate's concern when he leans over in pain, but returns without finding one. As the surviving members set up camp, Mo begins to blame Chris, despite Kate and Denise labelling him as heroic. A rapidly deteriorating Jack is in need for desperate medical attention, Mo and Chris go searching for help. During their tense search, the two come to blows, where Mo blames Chris for the death of his late daughter, Pixie Hannah, and the state of Jack. Mo then collapses in pain, where the severity of his injuries come to light. Chris goes to help, but Mo refuses, not wanting to seem weak and to be strong for Kate and Jack. When they return, Kate finds out Denise has been keeping the satellite phone for herself, but she threatens to kill her with the flare gun. Mo and Denise grapple for the flare, which she sets off in the sky accidentally. Angrily, she punches Mo in the affected area, before running. When the remaining group hear a helicopter, Mo and Kate kiss in relief, but Mo begins to cough up blood. Collapsing, he asks Chris to look after Jack and Curtis Hannah. Looking into the sun, he hears Pixie, before dying next to Chris and a sobbing Kate, as rescuers arrive too late.
Ali Karim	3 April 2019	Brain cancer	In 2016, He had a brain injury from when he, Glen and Lucy where run off the road by DI Cochrane, and in 2018's finale, he was revealed to have brain cancer (which we aren't sure if it is related to the 2016 brain injury or not) and he had surgery on his tumor, and chemotherapy. He dies from either a brain bleed or organ failure

Alex McKenna	November 1998	Sudden illness while in Tibet	Alex's estranged husband Michael and daughter Rachel received news from a Tibetan monastery of Alex's death. In 2002 Rachel discovered that Alex was alive and well, reports of her death having been exaggerated as part of a callous plot on Alex's part to spend some time apart from the rest of her family.
Lionel Skeggins	12 March 1999	Drowning	Shortly after his wedding, Lionel discovered evidence to suggest his wife Mackenzie Choat had tried to murder Oscar Henry, and was washed off a rock whilst trying to escape her. He would be presumed dead for the next 18 years, until the Ferndale Volcanic Eruption, where he ran into Chris Warner at the Hospital, with what appeared to be suffering from amnesia.
Dr. Justine Jones	11 September 2008	Car Bombing	Justine faked her death to escape Don Lennox and the Whitetails, hired by the dodgy pharmaceutical company Scott Spear to kill her. She fled to Australia but returned to testify at the trial of John Grainger and the dodgy drug company. Now resides in Australia.
Sean Mitchell	30 July 2010	Burns sustained from fire	Thai thugs faked his death so they could kidnap him without police distractions.
Nurse Hawks Logan	24th or 27th November 2017	Prison bombing in Syria	While Hawks was working in a prison hospital in Syria, Sass Warner was informed by Foreign Affairs that Hawks was killed with no survivors in the bombing. A few months later however, on the day of Finn and Esther's wedding, in April 2018, Sass was later informed that Hawks is actually still alive, but had lost a leg from the explosion.
