This article details the storylines of the TVNZ soap opera Shortland Street in 2012.
Highlights of the year[edit]
- After initially surviving the stabbing she received in the dramatic 2011 cliffhanger, Jill (Natalie Medlock) dies in surgery while Daniel (Ido Drent) falls into a coma from his head injury and upon waking, suffers from brain damage.
- Phoenix's (Geordie Holibar) teacher – Hayley O'Neill (Michelle Blundell), stalks and manipulates Chris Warner (Michael Galvin) in an attempt at a relationship for several months before she ends up murdered in the shows 20th anniversary and Chris gets arrested for her death.
- The shows 20th anniversary climaxes when a helicopter carrying a replacement heart for Gerald Tippett (Harry McNaughton) hits the hospitals powerlines and dramatically crashes into the carpark, nearly killing both Bella Cooper (Amelia Reid) and Nicole Miller (Sally Martin).
- When Chris' son Phoenix tries to find evidence to prove Chris innocent, Hayley's true killer Drew Webster (Joel Herbeck) kidnaps him and holds him hostage, before confessing to the murder.
- After a year of bad luck, Daniel Potts wins $1,000,000 at the casino.
- Brooke Freeman's (Beth Allen) illegitimate sister Bree (Rachael Blampied) loses her mind and tries to murder Brooke whilst stealing her identity.
- Following her birthday party, Roimata Samuels (Shavaughn Ruakere) is sexually assaulted in a dark alleyway by an unseen assailant who reveals himself to be Zac.
Storylines by month[edit]
January[edit]
- Daniel and Jill are rescued from the pharmacy and Daniel falls into a coma while Jill suddenly dies shortly after leaving surgery.
- Hunter overdoses while trying to cope with Jill's death and is arrested over the robbery.
- Chris breaks up with Rachel.
- Tom flees Ferndale when he learns his girlfriend - Ula, is pregnant.
- Evan learns that Ula is pregnant, and tries to help Ula cope with the situation.
- Callum gives up his role as CEO, to Rachel McKenna in order to look after the drug-addicted Hunter.
- Rachel promotes Brooke Freeman to the 2IC.
- Vinnie and Bree share a kiss.
- Nicole and Bree move in with Vinnie.
- After 2 months, Nicole and Maxwell get back together.
- Chris and Rachel also get back together.
- Brooke catches out Vinnie and Bree's affair.
February[edit]
- Zac Smith returns as a carer for Daniel.
- Daniel and Lana start a relationship.
- Hunter is kicked out of rehab for trying to score some drugs.
- When he and Evan meet a girl called Megan, Phoenix dumps Jasmine, only for Evan to score her.
- Ula's pregnancy gets revealed to her parents.
- Sarah and Zac realize they are in love with each other.
- Ula struggles with her parents about the decision of having a termination or not.
- Ula decides to have a termination but still not sure and everyone discovers that Evan Cooper is the "father" of Ula's child.
March[edit]
- After hearing Evan is the "father" of Ula's baby, Megan dumps him.
- Callum stands down from the drug unit.
- Hunter departs Ferndale to attend rehab in Hastings away from Callum.
- Evan leaves school, and begins a relationship with Ula.
- Chris and Phoenix attempt to save Phoenix's teacher Hayley from her abusive boyfriend, during which Phoenix saves Chris from an assault attempt.
- Zac and Sarah start dating.
- Daniel returns from rehab, but is suffering from confabulation.
April[edit]
- Roimata disowns her family after she discovers her father has been embezzling money.
- Phoenix is pleased to get close with Hayley but realises she is using him to get to Chris.
- Zac and Vasa start an affair.
- Murray believes Zac is sleeping with Wendy and attacks him.
- Nicole breaks up with Maxwell.
- Brooke, Bella and Luke begin to flat together.
- Bree comes clean to Chris about her lack of skill and subsequently breaks up with Vinnie.
- Lana and Daniel break up for good.
May[edit]
- Hayley manipulates the Warner's into thinking Phoenix is mentally unstable and makes it out she and Chris are having an affair.
- Ula discovers Vasa is cheating with Zac.
- Evan revealed to everyone who was at his family's party, that he was not the 'father' of Ula's baby after Ula tells him that she did not love him, it marked the end of their relationship.
- Nicole develops a crush on Lana. Eventually, Lana kisses Nicole. The two entered quickly into a relationship until the arrival of Maia put a stop to it. They were together briefly after the helicopter crash but Lana quickly broke it off with her when she realised she just wanted to be her friend.
- Sarah breaks off her relationship with Zac but quickly she changes her mind and gives him a second chance.
- The Jefferies Family make a surprising return to Ferndale.
- Paige Munroe, the one who caused Hunter's drug addiction also makes a surprising return but much to the fury of Callum McKay.
- Drew bludgeons Hayley, who eventually dies. Chris is framed for the murder and arrested.
- Shortland Street's new helicopter crashes into Bella's car, leaving Bella shaken up and Nicole severely injured. However Bella has a panic attack in front of new doctor Josh Gallagher (Chris Tempest).
- Callum was clear of all charges after Bailey made an complaint against him, he was offered the Acting CEO position but he kindly declined but departed Shortland Street to visit Hunter with his daughter, Sophie.
- Vasa kicked Ula out of their home, causing Ula to find home into an hotel.
June[edit]
- Wendy splits up from Murray after she discovers that he is seeing another woman named Cat. This news unfortunately destroys the rest of the family. Jasmine, her daughter slapped Cat.
- Bree was fired from Shortland Street Hospital by current CEO, Seth but quickly she was rehired, due to Bree blackmailing him with an apparent love affair on tape.
- Ula finally returns to Maxwell's apartment after realizing that things with Tom would never work out and having been fired on her first day at her job at the Sugar Cafe. She has made the decision to adopt out her baby.
- Ula finally had her baby boy and adopted him out.
- Rachel returns as CEO to Shortland Street Hospital.
July[edit]
- Phoenix discovered Drew's car, providing evidence that Chris did not kill Hayley. He is then abducted by Drew later on.
- Drew had stabbed Phoenix in the arm and is then arrested for kidnapping after admitting he was the one that killed Hayley.
- Phoenix was admitted to hospital, successfully being stabilized. Chris was granted permission to visit him.
- Bree nearly killed a man in surgery leading to her dismissal.
- Maxwell departed after accepting a job in Hong Kong.
- Jasmine damages Cat's motorbike by filling the petrol tank with water, as an act of revenge
- Josh and Paige are confused of their attraction for one another
- Brooke and Bree's mother, Annette Freeman returns to Ferndale
- Nicole organizes the social club party by hosting a murder mystery costume party
- Sue, the adoptive mother approaches Vasa, requiring her help of the baby whom she and Matt have named, Adam
- Ula urges her mother, Vasa to forward her complaint of Zac to Rachel, after hearing that Zac had threatened to tell all about their secret affair when Vasa had a go at him earlier on. But Vasa had dumped the complaint form in the bin, choosing to ignore the problem.
- Vasa had decided not to tell Ula that she had seen her baby instead choosing to lie to her about her continual affair with Zac.
August[edit]

September[edit]
- Daniel Potts leaves Ferndale for good to travel around the world, after winning a large amount of money at a casino and he had attempted to get back with Lana but she found herself attracted to Josh. He accepted this, realizing there was no future for him here.
- Josh and Lana begin dating.
- Bella and Luke get engaged.
- Bree attempted to leave Ferndale for Chicago as "Brooke Freeman". Eventually she is caught out and is sent to a psychiatric unit.
- A new doctor name Boyd Rolleston arrives in Ferndale as the latest top surgeon in Shortland Street Hospital, this unsettles Lana however as she seems to know something about him.
- Lana's childhood friends, Emma and Kylie arrive in Ferndale, upon hearing about the new doctor's (Boyd Rolleston's) arrival at Shortland Street Hospital, as a surgeon. They appear to have known him, believing him to be a 'murderer'.
- Jasmine starts to embrace the idea of being a Catholic, thanks to Angel, whom she still harbors a crush on.
- Vasa is still struggling to keep her secret of her affair with Zac hidden.
- Wendy and Murray attempt to work cooperatively in the planning of their daughter's (Bella's) wedding, despite their failed marriage.
October[edit]
- Vasa finally reveals her affair with Zac to Sarah, who is devastated of her betrayal, causing their friendship to come to an end. Only Vinnie and Ula remained by her side. It also led to Zac and Sarah breaking up for good.
- Sarah re-ignited old feelings for TK, but both knew they couldn't go through that path again, with TK being married and Sarah coming out of a relationship recently.
- Chris' son, Harry has been bullied by a boy named Liam, who is below his class but is suffering abuse from his father.
- Roimata returns from her holiday and is disgusted of Zac's actions towards Sarah.
- Wendy is furious with Vasa for betraying Sarah, causing more tension to rise between them. When it became too much for her, she decided to start up a work bullying campaign against her. Her complaint was declined but she was to reach a truce with Vasa.
- Lana, Emma and Kylie still keep to their plan into exposing Boyd Rolleston as a 'Murderer'. Kylie shares her story about her sister, Julia to Nicole, who had lost her sister, Morgan just three years ago. Kylie cannot figure out if Julia is either dead or alive.
- Paige tries to prove herself in being a good doctor by learning off from Chris and Boyd. She has manages to save a patient. Later on she is then surprised by the arrival of her Uncle, Shane Tucker, who was previously in a relationship with Gabrielle Jacobs and was also CEO temporarily at Shortland Street Hospital. He comes with a big offer for her.
- Lana and Josh break up thanks to Emma who was trying to get her to focus on their mission to uncover the truth about Boyd. Josh doesn't believe either of the girls about Boyd being a murderer.
- Despite her birthday celebration, Roimata is sexually assaulted at the back of the IV.
- Boyd recognises Kylie as the late Julia's sister.
- Some of the men have become suspects to the incident at the IV that involved Roimata. Emma straightaway thinks that it was Boyd.
- Angel and Jasmine begin a relationship, despite him declaring at first that he was determined to become a priest.
- Chris' cell inmate, Gus and his son, Jared re-appear, which may spark up trouble for Chris and the rest of the family.
November[edit]
- Josh was the first to witness Roimata, huddled and frightened in a corner at the scene where the sexual assault took place.
- Roimata is still shaken up from the incident at the IV.
- News about Roimata start to simmer around the others who are too lost for words but only feel sympathy for her. Meanwhile, TK is furious that it happened and he wasn't there to protect her.
- Angel was arrested and picked up by police who were on patrol duty and had witnessed him running from an 'incident' that had taken place during the night. Wendy assumed that it may have been the one with Roimata.
- Emma expresses her worry that Kylie wasn't in contact with her or Lana and so tells her about the incident with Roimata. Kylie is shocked and then reveals that Boyd knew who she was and tried to follow her as she was walking home. It is from there that Emma thinks it was Boyd.
December[edit]
- It is revealed that Zac Smith was the one that attacked Roimata as well as stalking her after he had attacked the Detective, Lisa, who was investigating the sexual assault case, in the Hospital Carpark. Zac was also the one who had sent a package containing Roimata's hair brush inside and leaving her lingerie on hers and TK's bed and a piece of white feather on their doorstep. Lisa meanwhile is then dropped from the case.
- Luke confesses to Bella that he has a tumor in his brain and at first decides not to marry her, but then changes his mind as the two finally wed.
- Angel leaves for his home in Colombia to pursue his interest in becoming a priest. Jasmine decides to go with him, claiming that she is going to be his wife someday by taking her passport with her. However Angel takes matters into his own hands by telling her parents and breaking up with her for good.
- Murray and Wendy re-ignite their feelings for each other during the course of Bella's wedding.
- Chris sadly tells Vasa that Gus died. He was at first being tended to by Vasa back at the hospital where the two clashed but then they somehow found a way to get along. She then decided to take care of him at her own home where they somehow realized that it was becoming more than friendship. Unfortunately Gus was taken away by his family to be checked into a nearby homecare facility as Jared, his son claimed that Vasa was trying to 'steal' him away from his family.
- Josh and Lana broke up for good after it was discovered that Josh had an attraction for Roimata. He lets it slip to Roimata who is shocked of his likeness for her but she refuses to leave TK.
- Zac drugs TK with GHB by slipping a sample into a glass of champagne. He then gives it to Josh who then passes it on to TK as a way of trying to get along with him.
- TK becomes heavily affected by the GHB, causing him to hallucinate, seeing Josh get into a vehicle. He gets into his vehicle, determined to chase 'Josh' down but unfortunately it causes him to crash into Murray who pushed Wendy out of the way, saving her life..

- Hayley O'Neill - The psychotic maths tutor of Phoenix Raynor who attempted to manipulate Chris into a relationship.
- Josh Gallagher - New doctor in ED who arrived for the show's 20th anniversary. He was in a brief relationship with Paige Munroe but is now seeing Lana Jacobs, with the blessings of both Daniel and Paige. Although their relationship is cut short when Lana's childhood friends make an appearance and getting her to focus on getting Boyd Rolleston behind bars.
- Cat Gibson - The Motorcyclist, Murray had met a few months earlier, she is now Murray's new woman after he separated from Wendy. However they break up after Murray realises that he cannot part from his family forever.
- Boyd Rolleston - A new surgeon hired by Rachel McKenna which irritated her partner, Chris. Lana was startled to see him, apparently knowing him awhile back.
- Kylie Brown - Lana Jacob's childhood friend, who arrives in Ferndale to expose the new surgeon, Boyd Rolleston as a 'murderer'. She reminded Lana that they had made a 'pact' that they were going to bring the truth to light.
- Emma Franklin - Another childhood friend of Lana Jacobs, she arrives in Ferndale as well to join Kylie and Lana in their quest for justice against new surgeon, Boyd Rolleston.

- Hunter McKay - Struggling with his drug addiction, Hunter departed for rehab in Hastings to be away from his father, Callum.

- Shane Tucker - Paige Munroe's Uncle. He was previously in a relationship with Gabrielle Jacobs, Lana's older sister and was CEO temporarily at Shortland Street Hospital. He returned there recently to offer Paige an exciting job over in the States although Paige comes to know the truth about his offer, he then departs when she tells him that she refuses to leave Ferndale.
