Strider Sports International, Inc. is a privately held, American multinational corporation and brand that is engaged in the design, development, manufacturing and worldwide marketing of bicycles and accessories. It specializes in balance bicycle models. Bicycling magazine noted, "Just like Kleenex and Coke, Strider is a brand name that defines a category."[1] Strider is a registered trademark of Strider Sports International, Inc, which is headquartered in Rapid City, South Dakota.

Origins and history[edit]

The first bicycle more than 200 years ago was a balance bicycle. Strider Sports International was founded in 2007 by Ryan McFarland, who took off the pedals, chain drive and other components of a pedal bike to create the first Strider Bike for his son.[2] Since 2007, Strider has sold more than 2 million bikes.[3]

Awards and achievements[edit]

In 2014, Strider received the Next Generation Award from Interbike.[4] Also that year, Small Business Administration awarded Ryan McFarland the Small Business Person of the Year for South Dakota.[5]

Philanthropy[edit]

Strider founded the Strider Rider Fund in 2014. Strider has since committed 1% of gross revenue from every Strider Bike sold to the Rider Fund.[6] In addition to supporting organizations and public institutions, the Strider Rider Fund supports the Strider Education Foundation, which was founded in 2017 as a nonprofit corporation.

Strider racing[edit]

The city of Sarasota, Florida hosted the first Strider Cup World Championship in 2011[7], then returned for the championships in 2012 and 2013.[8] Rapid City hosted the championships in 2014 and 2015. In 2016, the championship was held in San Francisco.[9] In 2017, it was held in Salt Lake City. The 2018 championship was held in Boulder, Colorado.[10]

Products[edit]

The first Strider model was the ST-1 produced in December 2007 for children ages 18 months to five years old. Strider released several upgraded versions to this through 2013. The Classic model was introduced in 2014 and Strider quit using the ST-# model names. Strider began segmenting the 12 models as Classic, Sport and Pro, each offering different features.

Strider introduced the 16 Sport and 20 Sport models at the 2014 Special Olympics USA Games in New Jersey. These models are used by older children and adults with balance and coordination challenges.[6]

In October 2017, Strider released the 14x model, a balance bike that includes a pedal assembly kit.[11]
