Strike Tax Advisory (legally Strike Advisory LLC) is an American tax advisory firm headquartered in Scottsdale, Arizona. The firm specializes in helping businesses identify and claim the research and development (R&D) tax credit under Section 41 of the Internal Revenue Code.[1] It was founded in 2019 by entrepreneur Jonathan Cardella, who also founded the digital product agency Ventive.[2]

History

Strike Tax Advisory was founded in January 2019 in Boise, Idaho by Jonathan Cardella, together with co-founders Tyler Kem and Casey Barka.[2][3] In December 2021, Tyler Kem was promoted to president of the company.[4] In April 2022, Casey Barka was appointed vice president of tax credit services.[5] In 2024, the company was named to the Inc. 5000 list of the fastest-growing privately held companies in the United States.[6]

Services and business model

The firm prepares R&D tax credit studies for businesses claiming the federal credit under Section 41 of the Internal Revenue Code, as well as applicable state-level credits.[1] Engagements involve identifying and documenting a company's qualified research activities and the associated expenses used to calculate the credit. Changes to the tax treatment of research and experimentation expenditures under Section 174 of the Internal Revenue Code have affected how businesses claim these credits,[7] a shift that tax practitioners have described as consequential for corporate research planning.[8]
