Jai Subar Nag !
Subar Dhar is a very beautiful mountain surrounded by dense kail, deodar and pine forests in the region of Bhaderwah (Jammu and Kashmir) dedicated to Shesha nag/Subar nag. In Bhadarwahi Dhar means "Mountain" while Subar is the name of Shesha nag. It is spread over a very large area comprising Agrontha and Patontha. The Temple of Subar nag is located on the top of the mountain.
History
Emergence of Subar nag
The name Subar Dhar is given after Subar nag. Subar nag emerges as an old person at Dharav. They asked a shepherd (resident of Kursari village) to help them reach the top of Dhar (Subar Dhar). Shepherd replied that he could, but who would take care of his sheep. Subar nag told the shepherd not to worry about the sheep, and when he went back to keep calling his sheep, he should not look back. The shepherd lifted them on his shoulder and started walking towards Dhar with a medieval curved sword in his hands. Subhar Nag told the Shepherd that when he starts to feel heavy, he can take them down. On the way near Fatri (place), the shepherd asked Subar nag for water to drink. Subar nag told him to cut a boulder with his sword. As soon as the sword touched the boulder, water started oozing out of the rock. They both drank water and continued their journey. On reaching Jutlaro Ger (tree made up of shoes), Subar nag told him to remove his shoes and continue to Dhar. On reaching dhar, the shepherd requested Subar nag to get down because they were very heavy to carry further. The shepherd then moved back, while reaching the place where he left his shoes, he saw a tree growing out of shoes. He reached Dharav and started moving down toward village Kursari and kept calling his sheep without looking back. On reaching home when he was putting his sheep in the shed, he noticed that the shed was full, but there was still a very long line of sheep with a four-horned sheep at the end.
Construction of Subar nag Temple and establishment of idol
According to the local shepherds, Subar nag used to play with them and asked them to build a temple for their living. Shepherds told villagers about the incident. All the villagers of Agrontha and Patontha villages agreed to build a Temple. The stones of the Temple were carried from Arki (village) which is about 3 km far from Subar Dhar. People carried 200–500 kg rectangle-shaped stones on their back towards the Temple in groups of 3–5 people. The Temple was constructed and the idol of Subar nag was established, but the next morning the idol had fallen and the door which was made towards Chinta was facing towards Bedota. People tried many times but failed to establish the idol and finally asked King Ajay Pal about the incident. The King visited the Temple along with his ministers and pandits. They performed yajna many times, but nothing worked. Finally, a head minister suggested the king to perform bali of a Brahmin on the place. Someone suggested the King about Raja Ramji, an old person who then came from Raina wari Kashmir and used to live in a cave near Banjala with his wife. Soldiers brought Raja Ramji to Subar Dhar for performing bali. Raja Ramji told people/soldiers to tell the king what if he established the idol without bali. Raja Ajay Pal agreed and gave 8 days to Raja Ramji for performing his ritual. Raja Ramji covered the Temple from all the sides with woolen cloth and dipped a dry wooden stick of a rav tree in soil with a condition: if the stick grew leaves, the idol would be successfully established. They performed yajna for 7 days continuously and on the 8th day morning, the dry stick grew leaves and the idol of Subar nag was finally successfully established. Raja Ajay Pal gifted them around 500–800 kanals of land, 100 kanals near Tratha (nearest place to Subar Dhar) and other in Chaka area of Bhaderwah. Due to the Yajna performed by Raja Ramji, they were blessed with a child in their old age.
