Subhankar Sarkar
Subhankar Sarkar is an Indian Politician from West Bengal and the Former National Secretary of the Indian National Congress. He was also the State In-Charge of Odisha.[1] He currently is the Convener of the Bengal Congress Coordination Committee.[2] He is considered to be a close aide of Rahul Gandhi and a key member of Rahul Gandhi's team.[3][4][5]
Early and Personal Life
Subhankar Sarkar was born in Nandigram, West Bengal on 2 January 1960. He married Loora Ray Sarkar in 1998 and the couple have two children.
Educational Qualification
Subhankar Sarkar is a graduate professional and has completed his B.Com from University of Calcutta in 1982, B.A.(Spl) History from University of Calcutta in 1993, B.A. (Spl) Economics from University of Calcutta in 1991, B.Lip.Sc from University of Calcutta in 1990 and LLB from University of Calcutta in 1986.[6]
Early Political Career
Subhankar Sarkar joined the Indian National Congress as a student during his college days. Following which he held several organisational positions in the Indian National Congress.
National General Secretary of National Students' Union of India (1993-1996)
Subhankar Sarkar was appointed as the National General Secretary of National Students' Union of India in 1993. He was also made the N.S.U.I in-charge of Tripura, Maharashtra and Delhi. During his tenure the Indian National Congress won the prestigious Delhi University Students' Union election after a period of 9 years.
President of National Students' Union of India, West Bengal (1996-2004)
Subhankar Sarkar was appointed as the President of National Students' Union of India, West Bengal in 1996. During his tenure as the President Bengal N.S.U.I had a 73% hold over college unions across West Bengal. To promote education among the diverse classes of people in North Bengal he was appointed as the Chairman of North Bengal Educational Council. He even contested his first Parliament bye-election from Panskura in 2000[7] and faced defeat. As a young leader of the Indian National Congress in 2003 he was invited to participate in the historic Vichar Manthan Shivir held in Shimla.
National General Secretary of Indian Youth Congress (2004-2006)
Subhankar Sarkar was appointed as the National General Secretary of the Indian Youth Congress in 2004.
State Secretary of West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee (2007-2009)
Subhankar Sarkar was appointed as the Secretary of West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee in 2007. He was also made the party in-charge of three districts of West Bengal and was given the independent charge of Bengal N.S.U.I. In 2007 he was also made the observer for the Tripura assembly elections. His position as Secretary had been renewed in 2010, but he refused to continue.
Spokesperson of West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee (2007-2013)
Subhankar Sarkar was appointed as the official party spokesperson in 2007. During his tenure as the Spokesperson he became the face of the party in West Bengal television, representing the views of the Indian National Congress in the state and national media.
General Secretary of West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee (May 2013-June 2013)
Subhankar Sarkar was appointed as the General Secretary of West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee in May 2013. His tenure as General Secretary was short lived as he was soon appointed as the National Secretary of the Indian National Congress.
National Secretary of Indian National Congress (June 2013-April 2018)
Subhankar Sarkar was appointed as the National Secretary of the All India Congress Committee in 2013. He was one of the 13 politicians to be handpicked by the then Indian National Congress President and Vice President, Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi as the National Secretary of the Indian National Congress.[8] He was also made the State In-Charge of Odisha. During the 2014 Lok Sabha elections he was made a member of the screening committee to look after the Lok Sabha ticket distribution in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Lakshadweep and Puducherry.[9] Rahul Gandhi also appointed him as a screening committee member to look after the ticket distribution during the Jammu & Kashmir assembly elections.[10]
During his tenure as National Secretary he unsuccessfully contested the West Bengal State assembly elections in 2016 from Sreerampur, West Bengal.[11] The President of the Indian National Congress, Sonia Gandhi came down to campaign for him in Sreerampur.[12]
