SUBTLE – the Subtitlers' Association is an international association for audiovisual translators. It represents the interests of professionals working in subtitling, captioning, transcription, dubbing, audio description, and video game localization.
SUBTLE liaise with universities and relevant unions,[1] offer guidance to AVT professionals,[2] and their clients, advocates sustainable working conditions[3][4][5][6][7], and raise awareness of the importance of subtitling quality[8].
History
A group of professional subtitlers formed SUBTLE as a UK-based unincorporated association in 2006.[9]
Since 2010,[10] SUBTLE has been a partner of Languages & the Media, the International Conference on Language Transfer in Audiovisual Media.
In 2011, SUBTLE helped to found AVTE, the European federation of national associations and organizations for media translators, and has been one of its members since.[11]
In 2017 and 2019, SUBTLE representatives took part in meetings between AVTE (AudioVisual Translators Europe) and Netflix in Stockholm to discuss i.a., quality standards, workflows, working conditions, and copyrights.[12]
In 2021, SUBTLE co-authored the Machine Translation Manifesto,[13] released by AVTE, which advocates for a more nuanced approach to the use of artificial intelligence in audiovisual translation.
In 2022, SUBTLE launched SubtleBase, a database of audiovisual translations done by the members of the association.
Membership
As of April 2024, SUBTLE counts 500 members from 35 countries. Its membership includes AVT professionals, students, academics, and supporters.[14]
