Sudhir Desai

Sudhir Desai is a Gujarati poet, essayist and scholar from Gujarat, India.

Life[edit]

Sudhir Desai was born on 15 February 1934 in Petlad, Gujarat) to Surendrarai and Upendrabala.[1] His family belonged to Godhra. He completed BSc in Chemistry M.S. University, Vadodara. He completed Bachelor in Labour Law (L.L.B.) and later Master in Labour Law from Government Law College, Bombay University. He was awarded Ph. D. in 2012 for his thesis, Concept of Destiny in ancient India at the age of 80 years.[2]. He was married to Tarini Desai a Gujarati short story writer in 1955. They have a son Sanskar Desai a documentary filmmaker and two daughters Sanskritirani Desai a poet and Dhvani Desai an animation filmmaker. Desai Started writing modern poetry and published his first collection of poems "Aakansha "(1961)[3] His poetry collections "Lohine Kinare Ugel Vad " (1974)," Surya Ne Tarto Mukun Chun (1980), "Kagal Par Tirado" (1980) "Ek Aakash Manthi Bija AAkashman " ( 1991).He translated books into Gujarati namely " Mahaprabh Vallabhacharya "(Hindi Drama written by Sheth Govinddasji, 1971 ), "Munshi Premchand "(National Book Trust,1979) " Mayakovski Na Kavyo " ( Poems by Russian Poet Mayakovskri 1980 ), "Kagal Ane Kanvas " ( Poems by Punjabi Poet Amrita Pritam , 1989 ), " Pratyabhigna Hridayam " ( by Kshemraj ).He wrote Children's Books namely " Gappa Gadi" (1985), "Ghugahariyalo Bavo " (1989). His book on criticism was "Soviet Kavita Na Seemachinho "(1980) [1].He wrote a regular column in newspapers Mumbai Samachar,Janmabhoomi Pravasi, Sandesh, Madhyantar etc. His poems have been selected in many anthologies.

Awards[edit]

Desai won the Soviet Land Nehru Award for his book "Mayakovski Na Kavyo " in 1980. He won Gujarati Sahitya Akademi Award in 1980 for his poetry collection " Surya ne Tarto Mukun Chhun ". Thereafter he won awards for his thought provoking books from Maharashtra rajya Sahitya Akademi in 2003 and 2004 for his essay books "Mabalakh Khajano " and "Mabalakh Anand ".In 2004, he won the Sadvichar Award from the Gujarati Sahitya Parishad for " Mabalakh No Melo " and in 2006 the Vishunuprasad Trivedi Award for "Mabalakh Ni Sathe Sathe".
