Susan "Sue" Freestone OBE DL (born 1955) is a British educationalist and was the first female Principal of King's Ely (2004 - 2019), with an article being written on her appointment by the BBC,[1] and Headmistress of Sibford School (1997 - 2004).[2]

Early Life and Education

Born in 1955, Freestone attended Clifton High School, trained as a musician at the Royal Academy of Music, and then attended the University of Bristol.[3]

Career

Sibford School

In 1997 she became Headmistress of Sibford School and held the post until 2004. During her time at the school she was the first woman to be elected chairman of the Society of Heads, then known as the Society of Headmasters and Headmistresses.[1]

King's Ely

Freestone then became Principal and Chief Executive of King's Ely from 2004, retiring in 2019.[2] She was the first female Principal in King's Ely's millennia-long history and Freestone quickly garnered media attention from organisations such as the BBC as upon her appointment at King's Ely she reinstated Rugby, after it was abolished by the previous Principal.[4] During her tenure she grew the school's enrolment numbers by over a third, and oversaw the construction of a new Arts Centre and renovation of the school's sixth form centre, the Bishop's Palace. She also helped to instigate the establishment of the Ely Cathedral Girls' Choir in 2006, and launched the Cambridgeshire Educational Partnership in 2019. [5]

Other Appointments

Freestone has served as a governor for and has helped to oversee several state and independent schools in the UK and overseas, especially in regards to independent/state school partnerships, and is also a member of the Bishop's Council and the Finance Committee of the Diocese of Ely. [2]

She is a Director of Education for the Kalisher Trust and a former ISI Inspector.[6]

Deputy Lieutenancy and Order of the British Empire

In 2019 she was appointed a Deputy Lieutenant of Cambridgeshire and in 2021 she was awarded an OBE for services to Education and the community in Cambridgeshire. [2]
