Suitable for the Orient
"Suitable for the Orient" is a short story by author Karen Traviss. It was published in February 2003 in Asimov's Science Fiction. The story was given an honourable mention in the book, Year's Best Science Fiction #21.
Synopsis[edit]
The story focuses on a doctor who has to come to terms with his assignment as a doctor on a human outpost, and his role as a sub-standard doctor, as he was stationed specifically because he is in a place where he's not essential. During the story, the human colony gains some tense relations with a native sub-sentient race after a hunting expedition.

"Suitable for the Orient" was first published in the February 2003 issue of Asimov's Science Fiction.[1] Traviss later included the story in her 2014 self-published collection View of a Remote Country.[2]
It has subsequently been translated into Russian and Spanish and has been published in Если (If), issue number 9, and the February 2004 issue Asimov Ciencia Ficción, respectively.[3][4]
Reception[edit]
While describing the collection View of a Remote Country, The Verge noted that "Suitable for the Orient" was one of several "really fascinating stories".[5]
