Sujon Mahabub
Sujon Mahabub is a Bangladeshi performance artist. He is known for exploring the relationship between modern humans and time in his work, including a five-part series titled "Man the Slave of Time."[1] He has won several awards for his performances, including the best award in the Performance Art category at the 23rd National Young Artist Art Exhibition.
Biography
Early life and education
He was born on 10 October 1988 in Manpura island, Bhola. He began his art career at the Narayanganj Fine Arts School, where he trained in painting and graphic design, and received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. He later earned his Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Development Alternative.[2]
Career
In his early career, Sujon participated in performance art events organized by the University of Dhaka's Faculty of Fine Arts and regularly took part in performances marking International Mother Language Day.[1]
Sujon's works have been exhibited at various national and international events,[3][4][5][6] including the Asian Art Biennale Bangladesh, the "One Belt One Road Art Exhibition" in China, the Kolkata International Performance Art Festival, and the Asian Cultural Carnival at the Great Wall of China, as part of an event organized by a platform called Shilpita Bangladesh.[1]
In 2014 he visited all the sixty-four districts of the country under a project of Shilpakala to contribute to seventy-seven programmes as both coordinator and presenter. In each of the programmes he had to direct at least thirteen shows with twenty-five apprentices.[7]
Alongside his performance arts and paintings, he has appeared in dance-dramas on television,[8] including BTV, and acted in TV dramas, including those aired by Channel i.[9] He has also played roles in comical renditions of Bangladeshi movie songs.[7]
Sujon is currently working as a Guide Lecturer in the Department of Fine Arts at the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA).[2]
Awards and recognition
In 2015, Sujon was awarded for his creative arts from the University of Development Alternative (UODA) for his oil paintings "Shawpna Bhangar Golpo" and "Manush Somoyer Kritodas," which were displayed at a ten-day exhibition at the National Arts Gallery of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy.[7]
In 2021, Sujon was awarded in the art competition 'Bangabandhu and Bangladesh', at the Academy of Fine Arts on Friday in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and the Academy of Fine Arts. His awarded work is titled 'The Golden Man.'[10]
In 2022, Sujon was awarded the best award in the Performance Art category at the 23rd National Young Artist Art Exhibition for his work "Nijer Charkay Tel Dei,"[2] which explores themes of self-importance and motivation.[1] In the same year, he also won the Best New Artist Charukala Award-2022 for his performance art.[11][12]
