Sumina was born in Zurich, Switzerland to a family of professional musicians. Her father is a pianist, her mother is a singer and her sister is a cellist. She began to study the violin at age 5 with Simone Zgraggen and Philip Draganov. At age 17, she moved to Berlin to further her studies with Antje Weithaas at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler, and from The Juilliard School in New York City with Catherine Cho and Sylvia Rosenberg.[1]
Career[edit]
Sumina Studer is a prizewinner of numerous national and international violin competitions, such as the Michael Hill International Violin Competition in New Zealand[2], the Berliner International Music Competition, the Verbier Festival “Prix Rotary” Verbier St-Bernard prize in Switzerland, the TONALi-Violin Competition in Germany[3], the International Louis Spohr Competition in Germany[4], the International Arthur Grumiaux Competition in Belgium, the European Union of Music Competitions for Youth (EMCY) prize, and is a three-time first prizewinner of the Swiss National Youth Music Competition.
Her career has lead her to perform on internationally significant performing stages in Germany, Japan, China, Hong Kong, Singapore, the United States and Switzerland, and she collaborates on stage with world-renowned artists such as Ray Chen, Julien Quentin, Thomas Demenga and her sister, Sayaka Selina.[1]
She plays on a historical violin made in 1707 by Omobono Stradivari, son of Antonio Stradivari, courtesy of the Stradivari Stiftung Habisreutinger.[5]
Online Presence[edit]
Sumina's career on social media began when a recording of her performing Niccolò Paganini's Caprice No. 5 amassed 10 Million views. Following that breakthrough, musical duo TwoSet Violin dedicated a Youtube video to her video performance, which gathered over 2 Million views. She uses social media platforms such as Instagram and Youtube with the mission to expand her audience's interest for the violin and to make classical music relatable to a younger generation.[1] She also educates about topics such as mental health in the classical music industry, music theory as well as music history.
