Sunan al-Fiṭrah (Natural/Instinctive Traditions) in Islam means the attributes that God has created people with. Human beings have a tendency and a need for them, unless the society around them influences otherwise. It was mentioned in several ḥadiths of the Prophet, including:

  • On the authority of Ibn ‘Umar that the Messenger of God said: “It's of the natural instinct: to shave the pubic hair, trim the nails, and trim the moustache.”
  • On the authority of Abu Hurairah, the Prophet said: “Five things are part of the natural instinct: circumcision, shaving pubic hair, clipping the nails, plucking the armpits, and trimming the moustache.”

Types[edit]

The best to conclude most of Sunan Al-Fitrah is the following ḥadith:

  • On the authority of Aisha, she said: The Messenger of God said: “Ten things are from the natural instinct: cutting the moustache, letting the beard grow, Miswāk (brushing the teeth with an Arāk twig), Istinshāq (sniffing with water to clean the nose), clipping the nails, washing the knuckles (skin crevices), plucking the armpits, shaving the pubic hair, and reducing the water” means cleaning oneself with water after toilette. Zakariyā [one of the hadith's narrators] said: Mus‘ab ibn Shaybah [one of the hadith's narrators] said: I forgot the tenth, unless it is Maḍmaḍah (shaking water and rinsing the mouth).

So the most important of them can be within 10 qualities:

  1. Cutting the moustache.
  2. Exempting (not shaving) the Beard.
  3. Miswak, brushing the teeth.
  4. Cleaning the nose with water.
  5. Rinsing the mouth with water.
  6. Washing the knuckles and skin crevices.
  7. Plucking the armpits.
  8. Shaving the pubic hair;
  9. Cleaning after toilette with water.
  10. Cutting the nails.
