The Sunshine District is a geographical district of the Barbershop Harmony Society (BHS).

First organized as the Citrus Region as a part of the Dixie District, affiliated with the then Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America, Inc. (SPEBSQSA), in 1948 . The region seceded from the Dixie District to officially become the 15th district of the Society on April 18, 1957.[1] The district encompasses the entire state of Florida.

Chapters[edit]

The district currently has 36[2] active chapters from all across the state. The oldest chapter, the Tampa Bay Heralds of Harmony, was established in 1945.

International Championship Quartets[edit]

The Suntones were the first quartet out of the Sunshine District to win gold in 1961.[3] This led to long & successful career including nine albums[4] and landed them appearances on national television shows like The Jackie Gleason Show, The Mike Douglas Show & The Honeymooners.[5]

International Championship Choruses[edit]

Sunshine saw their sole International Champion come in 1965 with Miami’s appropriately named, Miamians. While the district has only claimed the single title, member chapters have finished in the top 10 internationally 20 times over the years.[6]
