The Super Mario Wiki (often abbreviated to MarioWiki) is a wiki that collects information about the Super Mario franchise and related series. Founded on August 12, 2005,[1] the wiki is a fan project and has no affiliation with Nintendo.[2] Its wiki software is MediaWiki. It is a part of the Nintendo Independent Wiki Alliance network of wikis and the Mushroom World Encyclopedia.[3][4][5] The content of the Super Mario Wiki is available under Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported, unless otherwise noted.[6][7]

Super Mario Wiki's coverage is broader than the Super Mario franchise, since it also covers partner franchises like Donkey Kong, Wario and Yoshi. Crossover games, such as the Super Smash Bros. series, are also covered in the Super Mario Wiki, but from the perspective of Super Mario and its partner franchises.[8]

According to American author and vlogger John Green, the wiki is "astonishingly exhaustive and carefully sourced".[9]

Super Mario Encyclopedia, a book that is officially sanctioned by Nintendo, released in 2018, reused portions of the wiki’s content without providing attribution.[2]

History

GamerFocus

The Super Mario Wiki originated from the GamerFocus Wiki Network, a blog and assortment of gaming wikis founded by AgentSeethroo in the summer of 2005.[1][10] Porplemontage assisted with the project and launched three new wikis to join Halopedia in the network[11]: the Video Game Cheats Wiki (CheatsWiki), the GamerFocus Wiki, and the Super Mario Wiki. While CheatsWiki and GamerFocus Wiki eventually closed due to lack of interest, as did the GamerFocus concept, two standouts of the network - Halopedia and Super Mario Wiki - continue to thrive to this day.

Wiki Alliance

The extent of Super Mario Wiki's coverage has been the subject of much debate.[1] In 2006, it was determined that instead of covering all the Super Mario franchise's important partner franchises on a single wiki, each would receive its own dedicated wiki and interlink to one another, resulting in the Wiki Alliance’s formation. The concept was initiated by launching the Donkey Kong Wiki, with preparations underway for the launch of a Wario wiki. After just a few months, the idea of the Donkey Kong Wiki was abandoned due to insufficient interest. The concern was that creating more wikis would result in their inactivity in favor of the Super Mario Wiki. Instead, the decision was made to close the Donkey Kong Wiki and consolidate all content into the single "super" Mario Wiki to prevent community fragmentation.

Nintendo Independent Wiki Alliance (NIWA)

In 2010, representatives from Bulbapedia and Zelda Wiki contacted the Super Mario Wiki proposing an alliance of independent Nintendo wikis.[1][12][13] The network aimed to protect fans against Wikia and similar operators’ interference and assist small, independent wiki communities. Initially, Porplemontage dismissed the request due to a combination of real-life obligations and skepticism towards wiki networks. However, the Super Mario Wiki community was persistent and convinced Porple to accept the proposal. Thus, the Nintendo Independent Wiki Alliance was created which currently boasts over 30 member wikis and has remained strong for over a decade. History repeated itself in 2019 when the Donkey Kong Wiki, a separate Wikia fork from the Wiki Alliance project, was closed by NIWA. Its distinctive content was subsequently integrated into the Super Mario Wiki.

Community

The 'Shroom

The 'Shroom is a monthly newsletter of the Super Mario Wiki, written and edited by the community.[1][14][15] Its mission is to provide up-to-date information and entertainment concerning the website and community to readers and editors alike. Founded in 2006 as a small community portal by Sadaharu, the project gained momentum in 2007 under the leadership of Wayoshi and attracted a diverse and vibrant group of writers. Currently, the project boasts a large team of contributors and an avid reader base, ensuring that it remains more active than ever. In addition to reporting the most recent news and statistics about the Super Mario Wiki and its community, the newsletter provides a wide range of content. This includes comedic fabricated Super Mario tales, recreational games and activities, multimedia, and thorough review and analysis sections.

Mario Awards

On the first anniversary of the Super Mario Wiki, the site began strongly, but only had a limited number of active users.[1][16] On the second anniversary, when a user base had finally formed, the site marked the occasion with the first annual Mario Awards ceremony, celebrating 30 of their favorite Super Mario topics, including favorite games, music, items, series, moments, enemies, and more, by conducting polls and producing mini creative writing and art projects to present the results in a fun way.

Over the years, significant modifications have been made to the anniversary ceremony, such as the introduction of Userpedia, Fail, and 'Shroom awards in the early years (2008, 2009, 2010 respectively), the incorporation of formal game tournaments with prizes by 2011, and the inaugural Awards Committee director election in 2013. Over time, the quality of presentations improved, and activity reached its peak. The ceremonies adapted to the needs of the community, including the fusion of User and 'Shroom awards into Community Awards, creating a more extensive platform to acknowledge the abilities and hard work of our wiki editors. In 2016, the Super Mario Wiki team donated $1,000 to the Tommy Thompson Park Bird Research Station, in honor of the late bureaucrat Wayoshi.[17]

Super Mario Boards

The Super Mario Boards, known as the forum, offer a significant social venue for the Super Mario Wiki community.[1][18] Users enjoy a casual outlet for diverse topics, keeping the wiki focused on wiki-related matters. However, the forum also hosts the Wiki Collaborations board for collaborating on wiki projects. Additionally, there are hidden staff and community boards that contribute to running various site aspects. The Discord server is designed as a smaller version of the forum, producing comparable results in a more rapid environment.[19] Before Discord, the IRC channel was mainly used for chatroom events on the wiki.[20]

Over the years, the forum underwent name and domain changes, initially starting on October 15, 2006, as the Super Mario Wiki Forum (or MarioWiki Forum for short), with a URL of forum.mariowiki.com. Shortly after its launch, the forum was briefly renamed the Wiki Alliance Forum to coincide with a same-named project. Its domain changed to wikialliance.com, but it reverted back to its original name and subdomain in early 2007. In October 2011, the forum underwent its final rebrand, becoming the Super Mario Boards and moving to its current location at marioboards.com.
