Proposed Encyclopedias
Proposed Encyclopedias are named encyclopedia creation initiatives. An example of a prominent proposed encyclopedia is WORLD ENCYCLOPAEDIA (sometimes referred to as World Brain [1] proposed by H. G. Wells.
Some individuals and/or algorithms may categorize proposed encyclopedia initiatives as fictional (see for example Category:Fictional encyclopedias where World Brain is listed). While it is the case that the proposed encyclopedias are not realized in practice, they are not fictional in the general understanding of the term Fiction, and their intent is not to function as a Plot device. Proposed encyclopedias are plans for an organization of knowledge and often are calls for action.
The World Brain article discusses views crediting Wells with foreshadowing the World Wide Web (see Brian R. Gaines[2]) and Wikipedia (see Stromberg [3])
Richard Krzys' article on Encyclopedics in the Encyclopedia of Library and Information Sciences discusses aspects of proposed encyclopedias. [4] This article also points to Speusippus as an early encyclopedia designer. Speusippus may have started work on his proposed encyclopedia, however, there's no record or trace of an actual encyclopedia. Kryzs also points out that Francis Bacon described plans for an encyclopedia in his unfinished Magna Instauratio (Great Instauration). Bacon's Novum Organum and in particular his The Advancement of Learning inspired the Encyclopédie which in turn is considered to have influenced the French Revolution.
