Surjeet Singh Thakur is a politician, philanthropist, economist and expert at agricultural issues.[1][2][3] He hold the post of the state president of Aam Aadmi Party in Himachal Pradesh, India.[3] He is also a patron of art, architecture and poetry.[3] He came from a pastoral and agrarian farming household.[2]

Early life[edit]

Born in Himachal Pradesh's Nahan, Surjeet Singh Thakur was a farmer of sheep, apples, and peaches. He is a postgraduate in hotel management and social sciences.[2] One of his social initiatives aims to Himachali farmers stop erosion in the state and reestablish the Gaddi sheep farming culture.[4][1] He was born in a Sikh household and practices Sikhism, although a Sahajdhari, he often called for justice for the perpetrators of the Anti-Sikh Riots.[5]

Political career[edit]

Thakur joined Aam Aadmi Party in 2012.[1]

His policies are focused on humanitarian and political grounds those being:

  • Setting up free education in Himachal Pradesh till tenth standard.[6]
  • Adding the Himachali 'topi' or turban to Himachali school uniforms to preserve culture.[7]
  • Free medical assistance to anyone who needs it.[8]
  • Setting up mohalla (colony) clinics like those in Delhi and Punjab.[9]
  • Cultural work like reintroduction of Kangri art and Himachali music.[9]
  • Introduction of Kullui, Kangri and Gaddi in schools with the Takri Script instead of Devangari.[10]
  • Improving agriculture in Himachal Pradesh.
  • Ending unemployment in Himachal Pradesh through government factories and textile mills.[10]
  • He promised more development to smaller cities who were demanding status and said that Dharamshala and Manikaran wokld get their own districts.[11]
  • The Aam Aadmi Party pledged to give a monthly allowance of ₹1000 to all women in Himachal Pradesh and double to women above the age of 65.[12][13][14]
