Panji Surya Putra Sahetapy (born December 23, 1993) is a public figure, deaf activist, and sign language teacher. He is the recipient of Ruangguru Influencer Award for Fighting Deaf Rights in accessing Educational and Informative Contents (2018) and Young Voices Indonesia Awards 2017 for outstanding campaign for Sign Language Indonesia and advocacy on disability issues in Indonesia.
Surya made his acting debut in a movie in 2014 as a sign language instructor for "Sebuah Lagu Untuk Tuhan". A year later, he was featured in "Aisyah Biarkan Kami Bersaudara" as Tisna.
In 2018, Surya Sahetapy's fame widened with his sign language teaching to the President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, for the speech at the ceremony of the ASIAN Para Games 2018.
Early Life
Surya was born on December 23, 1993 in Jakarta, Indonesia. His father, Ray Sahetapy, is an actor. His mother, Dewi Yull, is a singer. He is the fifth generation of Tirto Adhi Soerjo. He has a deaf sister named Gisca Putri Agustina. He has appeared in some video clips; TRISOULS - ISYARAT (2018), DIA TAK CINTA KAMU (2017), PATAH HATI (2016)
Activisms
Prior to his formal study in the U.S., he represented Indonesia by participating in Deaf Youth Leadership Exchange, a one-month program hosted by the U.S. Embassy Jakarta (2016). Through his visit, he was very inspired by how friendly accommodation is in the U.S. for deaf people like him.
He actively campaigns for equality for people with disabilities, especially in Indonesia, where he believes there is still much room for improvement. Another collaboration was made between him and Center of Sign Language in Indonesia (PUSBISINDO) where he interprets kids' storybooks using sign language. He also uses his social media platforms such as Instagram and Youtube to raise awareness about sign language.
Achievement
He gained his diploma of Associate of Science in Applied Liberal Arts-Immersions: ASL & Deaf Studies from the National Technical Institute for the Deaf, New York in 2019. He recently earned his Bachelor’s degree in International-Global Studies at the Rochester Institute of Technology with the Sasakawa-DeCaro Endowed Scholarship Fund in 2021.
