Susan Meyers
Susannah "Susan" Meyers is a U.S. military officer and the former commander of Pituffik Space Base. She holds the rank of Colonel.
Military career
Meyers began her officer training with the United States Air Force in July 2001 and transferred to the United States Space Force in May 2021. On July 19, 2024, she assumed command of the 821st Space Base Group in Greenland, succeeding Col. Jason Terry. Approximately 650 personnel were stationed at the base at that time. On March 28, 2025, she hosted Vice President J. D. Vance and his wife at the installation.[1][2][3]
Removal from post
On March 31, 2025, Meyers sent a mass email in response to Vance's remarks, attempting to reassure the Danish, Canadian, and Greenlandic personnel working at the base. The text of the email was revealed on the site military.com after Vance's visit where Meyers hosted Vance and his wife.[4] She wrote, among other things: "spent the weekend thinking about Friday’s visit — the actions taken, the words spoken, and how it must have affected each of you", "I do not presume to understand current politics, but what I do know is the concerns of the U.S. administration discussed by Vice President Vance on Friday are not reflective of Pituffik Space Base", and "I commit that, for as long as I am lucky enough to lead this base, all of our flags will fly proudly — together".[5][6] She was relieved of command on April 10, 2025, due to a reported loss of confidence in her leadership. Her removal was announced on a social media post.[7]Sean Parnell, speaker for the Pentagon, explained: "Actions [that] undermine the chain of command or to subvert president [Donald] Trump’s agenda will not be tolerated at the department of defence."[8] She was succeeded by Col. Shawn Lee.[9]
Meyers was the fifth woman and tenth military commander to be relieved of their post.[6]
