💼 Occupation

Susan Sobbott (born May 25, 1964) is an American business executive, and was most recently the President of Global Commercial Services business at American Express.[1] Sobbott was responsible for all of the products that serve American Express’ commercial payment clients around the world.[2] She worked at American Express for 27 years,[1] and through her time with the company “she established herself as a leader who spearheads creative marketing strategies, uncovers pockets of untapped growth and cares deeply about her customers.”[2]

Early Life & Education

Sobbott grew up in Westwood, New Jersey[3] with her parents and three siblings.[4] Her parents were first-generation Americans, her father’s family being Polish, and her mother’s Italian.[4]

When Sobbott was five years old, her father decided to start his own business.[4] He started a local messenger service, which he then expanded to long-haul tractor trailers, delivering items such as food products.[4]

Sobbott was the first of her three siblings to go away to college, attending Georgetown University, where she got her BA.[3][4] She then went on to receive her MBA from the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business.[2]

Career

Sobbott had a 27-year career at American Express, before announcing that she would be leaving the company in February of 2018.

During her time with the company she held various roles, touching each area of the business. For the bulk of her career she held senior leadership roles in the commercial business, first with small business division, OPEN, and most recently with the combined Global Commercial Services businesses.

In her earlier days with the company she served in senior roles in both the Merchant Services and Consumer Card businesses as well.[1]

During her ten years as President of American Express OPEN, Sobbott transformed American Express “into the leading credit card issuer for small businesses, launching more than 20 successful card products, increasing revenues more than 50 percent, and doubling profits.”[2] She was also active and interested in helping women entrepreneurs.[5]

As head of OPEN, she also launched Small Business Saturday, encouraging people on the Saturday after Thanksgiving (following Black Friday and proceeding Cyber Monday), to "Shop Small" at their small, local, independent retailers, restaurants, hair salons, etc.[1] In 2017, Small Business Saturday celebrated its eighth year as a holiday, and an estimated 108 million consumers reported shopping or dining at local, independently-owned businesses on the day.[6]

I recently caught up with Susan Sobbott, President of American Express OPEN, and she shared with me her views about what both women and men need to succeed in their new ventures and well as several notable differences between them. Success, Susan explains, comes down to a large dose of confidence, competence and connections (and, I’d add, a clear understanding of the right business model).
