The Sustainable Villages Foundation (German: Stiftung nachhaltige Dorfentwicklung) is a non-profit foundation established in 2020 with headquarters in Germany and Rwanda. It supports village development projects in rural Rwanda.[1]

Fields of activity

The foundation follows an integrated approach to village development, combining several aspects of rural life. In a pilot area with around 34,000 inhabitants, activities include drinking water supply, agriculture and nutrition, energy, education, health and incom generation. The experiences gained are intended to be transferred to other regions of Rwanda.

Organization

The foundation’s Executive Board consists of founder Joachim Hauschopp and Daniel Schmidt. The chair of the seven-member Board of Trustees is Rwandan solar entrepreneur Francine Munyaneza. Both the Executive Board and the Board of Trustees work on a voluntary basis.[2] Project implementation is carried out by a local team, partly in cooperation with local companies and partner organizations.

Projects

Measures implemented by the foundation include:

  • Electrification of schools and households without grid connection through solar systems,[3]
  • Construction of kindergartens and school buildings,[3][4]
  • Establishment of smart classrooms, IT and English training for teachers,[5]
  • Installation of rainwater tanks for households and cisterns for schools,[6]
  • Adult literacy courses,[5][7]
  • Agricultural training and establishment of a cold storage facility.[3][8]

The foundation cooperates with local communities, authorities, businesses and non-governmental organizations.

Reception

In July 2022, the foundation was named "Foundation of the Month" by the Invitrust Foundation.[1] Its work has been supported by funding programs of Portuguese energy company EDP[3], the Schmitz Foundations, the Saxon Youth Foundation[5] and the German Embassy in Rwanda. Media coverage has included the Rwandan magazine Muhazi Yacu[4] and the television channel Izuba TV.[9]
