Syaura Qotrunadha (born 1992), better known as Syaura, is an Indonesian[1] interdisciplinary artist based in Yogyakarta who involves photography, interactive art, paper recycling, video art, digital archives, installations, and publication materials in her works[2].

Early Life[edit]

Syaura was born in Mataram[3] with both Sumatran and Javanese descents. Her mother is a retired landscape architect and her father was a diving instructor. She is an only child and has frequently moved from one city to another since she was a kid.

Closely related to the ocean and photography since childhood, she was enrolled in Mechanical Engineering Department majoring Naval Architecture in University of Indonesia in 2011 before moving to Indonesian Institute of the Arts Yogyakarta majoring Photography in 2012, and graduating in 2017.

Career[edit]

Having big interests in music, science, history and social issues[4], she started her career in 2014 as an internship photojournalist for Rolling Stone Indonesia. In the same year, she was also involved in Ruang MES 56's residency programme and introduced to Yogyakarta's local art scene for the first time.

The following years, she continue focusing on her study while pursuing career in visual arts by initiating key projects related to historical events such as Lokananta Project (2014-2016)[5], Omitted Narrative, Gathered Memories (2015) along with Venti Wijayanti and Agni Saraswati, and Sambunghambar (2015-2018) collaborated with Testa Siregar and artist collectives in Jakarta, Bandung, and Bogor. Moreover, she also did public workshops, published a comic strip for Canadian zine, and actively exhibit her works in group shows.

After graduating in 2017, she worked as a freelance graphic designer and photographer while continuing her passion in artwork productions. In late 2019, she started to collaborate with A. Semali and Timothy Satyaabieza creating the video art trilogy Astronaut, Living Area, and Nomad's Land Identity Card (2020), The Fattest Land at the Fair (2020), and Fluidity of Future Machines (2021). She is also involved in Eyebeam NYC residency (2021) as one of shortlisted artists for the 4th VH Award held by Hyundai Motor Group.
