From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The Sylheti Accent of Bengali (Bengali: সিলেটি আঞ্চলিকতা) represents a distinct variation of spoken Bengali primarily found in the Greater Sylhet district in Bangladesh and across certain districts in Northeast India, including Karimganj, Cachar, Hailakandi, North Tripura, and Unakoti.

Given that Sylheti is a tonal language while Bengali is non-tonal, individuals fluent in Sylheti face challenges speaking Bengali, the official language of Bangladesh, Barak Valley and Tripura accurately. To maintain strong connections with the Bengali-speaking community, especially after becoming a part of East Bengal in 1947 as part of East Pakistan, eventually later seceding into becoming a part of Bangladesh since 1971, Sylheti speakers have developed their own Bengali accent to ensure mutual intelligibility with Bengalis.

Features

Sylheti speakers face difficulty in articulating retroflex sounds present in the Bengali language. Additionally, Sylheti pronunciation deviates from the Bengali pronunciation system, resulting in distinct features in the Sylheti Accent of Bengali:

Substituting the উ /u/ sound for the Bengali ও /o/. For instance: ওজন (weight) -> উজন
Omitting nasal sounds like - ঁ /◌̃/. For example: ইঁদুর (insect) -> ইদুর
Using:
/g/ for both গ /g/ and ঘ /gʱ/
/s/ for both চ /tʃ/ and ছ /tʃʱ/
/z/ for all জ,য /dʒ/ and ঝ /dʒʱ/
/ʈ/ for both ট /ʈ/ and ঠ /ʈʱ/
/ɖ/ for both ড /ɖ/ and ঢ /ɖʱ/
/t/ for both ত /t/ and থ /tʱ/
/d/ for both দ /d/ and ধ /dʱ/
/ɸ/ for both প /p/ and ফ /pʱ/
/b/ for both ব /b/ and ভ /bʱ/
/r/ for all র /r/, ড় /ɽ/, and ঢ় /ɽʱ/
/k/ for both ক /k/ and খ /kʱ/ in certain contexts such as [ki, ku, kʱi, kʱu]
and /x/ for both ক /k/ and খ /kʱ/ in words having [ko, ke, ka, kʱo, kʱe, kʱa].

Furthermore, the Sylheti Accent of Bengali replaces some Bengali words with native counterparts that resemble Bengali. For instance: replacing "ki" with "kita."
