Sylveon (/ˈsɪlvɒn/ (Audio file "Sylveon_Voice_Line.mp3" not found)), known in Japan as Nymphia (ニンフィア, Ninfia), is a Pokémon species in the Pokémon franchise, first introduced in Pokémon X and Y. It evolves from Eevee upon leveling up with high friendship if the Eevee knows a Fairy-type move. Designed by Atsuko Nishida, Sylveon was the first Fairy-type Pokémon to be introduced. It has appeared in a wide range of merchandise and various adaptations and spin-off titles. It is known as the Intertwining Pokémon.[2]

Sylveon appears as a pink and white fox-like creature with rabbit-like ears and decorative bows. Its ribbon-like tendrils are used to soothe other individuals. It is a very popular Pokémon for its cute appearance and for its color palette's resemblance to the transgender flag.[3]

Conception and characteristics

Sylveon is a species of fictional creatures called Pokémon created for the Pokémon media franchise. Developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo, the Japanese franchise began in 1996 with the video games Pokémon Red and Green for the Game Boy, which were later released in North America as Pokémon Red and Blue in 1998.[4] In these games and their sequels, the player assumes the role of a Trainer whose goal is to capture and use the creatures' special abilities to combat other Pokémon. Some Pokémon can transform into stronger species through a process called evolution via various means, such as exposure to specific items.[5] Each Pokémon has one or two elemental types, which define its advantages and disadvantages when battling other Pokémon.[6] A major goal in each game is to complete the Pokédex, a comprehensive Pokémon encyclopedia, by capturing, evolving, and trading with other Trainers to obtain individuals from all Pokémon species.[5]

Sylveon was designed for the sixth generation of Pokémon in order to promote the newly added Fairy typing by adding a new Eeveelution to match.[7] During its initial reveal, its type was not stated, causing fans to speculate that it could be representing a potential normal type[8] or new "Light" type.[9] It was designed by Atsuko Nishida,[10] who says she designed it to be a different take on a fairy as compared to the more typical humanoid representations.[11] Following its addition, the previous Eeveelutions also had their designs slightly adjusted to fit with Sylveon.[12] According to Junichi Masuda, Sylveon was the very first Fairy-type Pokémon to be added in-game,[13] and it fittingly was also the first to be revealed to the public.[11]

Sylveon has a pink, white, and blue color scheme, with long rabbit-like ears, large blue eyes, and several bows donning its appearance.[3] The ribbons from these bows are actually feelers that emit an aura that soothes people and Pokémon around it.[14] It uses these feelers to wrap around its trainer while walking with them,[7] which allows it to read and stabilize their emotions.[15] Sylveon evolves from Eevee upon level up if the player has high friendship with Eevee and has taught it a Fairy-type move. This evolution mechanic makes use of another new feature to X and Y, Pokémon-Amié.[16] Its ability is Cute Charm, which may infatuate the opposing Pokémon on contact,[17] while its hidden ability is Pixilate,[18] which transforms Normal-type moves into Fairy-type moves, thus giving them a 1.2 times boost in power.[19]

In battle, Sylveon is statistically slow, but has high Special Defense and few weaknesses,[20] and a good HP stat.[21] It functions as a special attacker,[19] and has several status moves. Its lowest stats are its physical attack and defense.[22] Unlike the other Eeveelutions, Sylveon has seen notable use in competitive battling.[15]

Appearances

Sylveon first appears in X and Y, and is also available in the subsequent games Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Pokémon Sun and Moon, Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, and Pokémon Sword and Shield. In Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, it is the ace of Team Star leader Penny's all-Eeveelution team,[23] and can be encountered rarely in the wild.[24] Additionally, it was heavily utilized by players for its ability to make money through the Academy Ace Tournament, and for its strength in Tera Raid Battles, particularly against Dragon Tera Type Charizard.[19]

Sylveon has also made appearances in several spin-off games. In Pokémon Go, it evolves from Eevee by using the nickname "Kira" and setting it as your buddy.[25] In Pokémon Masters EX, it appears accompanying both Valerie[26] and Penny.[27] In Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket, the Sylveon ex card from Eevee Grove saw significant usage in Ursiiday's Pocket Weekly tournament, with a 56.8% win rate, primarily being used for its powerful ability to draw from the player's deck.[28] In Pokémon Unite, it is considered to be a strong attacker.[29]

Its animated debut was in the "Eevee and Friends" short that preceded Pokémon the Movie: Genesect and the Legend Awakened in theaters.[30] In the anime series, Sylveon is the partner Pokémon of Serena in Pokémon the Series: XY.[31] Sylveon has also had a minor appearance in the X & Y arc of the Pokémon Adventures manga, belonging to the lead character Y (also known as Yvonne). This Sylveon was nicknamed VeeVee.[32]

Numerous cards based on Sylveon have been released for the Pokémon Trading Card Game since its introduction. One popular card, Sylveon VMAX from Eevee Heroes, features a Sylveon with a particularly angry expression, which Japanese fans found cute and surprising, as Sylveon is typically depicted with a gentle expression.[33] Many of the more sought after cards such as Sylveon ex: Prismatic Evolutions (Special Illustration Rare) can sell for over US$500.[34]

Cultural impact

Sylveon is one of Junichi Masuda's favorite Pokémon, with him forming an attachment to it due to using it in his team when playtesting X and Y.[7] In 2020, Google and the Pokémon Company collaborated to host a survey gauging the most popular Pokémon, where Sylveon placed in 6th, with over 66 thousand votes.[31] In an unofficial poll to find the cutest Pokémon, Sylveon was voted second, only being beaten out by its pre-evolved form.[35] In a 2016 Japanese poll, Sylveon was the 5th most popular Pokémon overall.[36]

Sylveon is also popular among transgender and generally LGBTQ fans of the franchise, due to its color scheme resembling the colors of the transgender flag.[3][37] PinkNews described it in a 2023 article as "the lord, saviour and collective mascot for the trans Pokémon community".[38] Writing for TheGamer, Dod Seitz referred to Sylveon as a "gay icon",[39] and Ty Galiz-Rowe of Gayming Magazine called it a "trans icon".[40] Drag queen Nymphia Wind is named after Sylveon's Japanese name.[41]

Sylveon is a popular Pokémon within merchandising. Like the other Eeveelutions, it has received a Build-A-Bear Workshop plush toy.[42] In 2019, the Pokémon Center released a dedicated line of Sylveon-themed apparel.[43] In 2025, a life-sized plush was put up for pre-order alongside Glaceon and Leafeon.[44]

Critical reception

Sylveon's color scheme has been compared to the colors of the Transgender flag.

As the first Fairy-type Pokémon,[13] Sylveon has been described as "one of the most popular Pokémon".[45] This was echoed by Dot Esports's Yash Nair, who described Sylveon as being "cute as heck", placing it at number 4 on a list of the best Fairy-type Pokémon.[15] This popularity has remained steadfast since its first reveal, being used in a winning team by Tomoya Ogawa in the 2023 Pokémon World Championships VGC Senior Division, where he won gold. The following year, a Pokémon Scarlet and Violet distribution released a Sylveon via Mystery Gift.[46]

Sylveon's design has received varied reception. Sam Arthurs of Destructoid said that its ribbon feelers were "offputting" and that she would be "a little embarrassed walking around with this one following me".[17] Olivia Richman of Esports concurred with this, saying that "ribbons and pink don’t automatically mean you are the cutest thing ever".[47] Despite the criticism on its design, Sylveon was described as "the bane of any committed Fairy-hater’s existence" as a positive trait in an article for USA Today's For The Win.[18] Sylveon has had recognition for its resemblance to older characters in the series, Lucas M. Thomas writing for IGN that its ribbons bear similarities to the design of the Pokémon Black and White gym leader Skyla, theorizing that its then-unrevealed type could be Flying, Skyla's signature type.[9] Sylveon's color scheme has been compared to the flag used by the transgender community, Lena Waithe of SNKRDUNK Magazine writing "none are more closely tied to the LGBTQ+ community than Sylveon. Its color scheme of pink, pastel blue, and white resembles the colors of the trans flag." She also commented on the characteristics of the Fairy-type in general, saying that "intentionally or otherwise", Fairy-type lore has "close real-world parallels to LGBTQ+ issues".[37]

Its Shiny variation has also received positive feedback, with its flipped color palette of baby blue and pink accents.[34] Bleeding Cool's Theo Dwyer credits the value of the Hidden Fates Shiny Sylveon card to the strength of the Pokémon's Shiny design.[48] Stacey Henley suggests that the color palette flip strengthens its status as "the unofficial transgender Pokemon".[49]

Sylveon's usage in the TCG has also been acclaimed. Writing for TheGamer, Andrew Scariati says that its "bright pink color palette and distinction as one of the best Fairy-type Pokemon make it a magnet for ensembles in its best card arts".[34] Sylveon's usage in Pokémon Unite has been criticized for the choice to make it an attacker, due to the numerous other offensive options available and the amount of support tools Sylveon could utilize. Cian Maher writes, "It’s an alright Attacker, sure, but it could have been an S-tier Support."[50]
