T. Suneel Kumar is the Commissioner of Police, Bengaluru City, Karnataka. He has taken charge as the 33rd Commissioner of Police on July 31st, 2017. An Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of 1989 batch, T. Suneel Kumar was Managing Director, Karnataka State Police Housing Corporation and Infrastructure Development Limited earlier.   

Earlier Life and Educational Profile[edit]

T. Suneel Kumar IPS, was born on 23 October 1960, in Thukivakam village near Thirupathi, Andhra Pradesh and grew up like any other child and studied in Government Telugu medium schools.

Suneel Kumar did his schooling at Pakala village in Chittoor District, studied primary at Panchayat Samiti Elementary School and secondary at Zilla Parishad High School. For intermediate (PUC), went to Andhra Pradesh Residential Junior College at Nagarjuna Sagar. He did his B.Sc Agriculture from Venkateshwara Agricultural College, Thirupathi in Andhra Pradesh. He joined the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi for M.SC Horticulture where he specialised in Breeding pumpkins. His exposure to civic activities at Indian Agricultural Research Institute later prompted him to take up the Civil Service Exams.

Career[edit]

After post graduation he joined Indian Overseas Bank as Agricultural Officer and later as Assistant Development Officer in National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD). While working at NABARD in Chandigarh, in 1986 he passed his Indian Forest Service Exam and was posted as DCF (Soil conservation) in Uttar Pradesh. Later he cleared UPSC Exam and become an IPS officer in 1989, posted as ASP in Humnabad, Bidar District, Karnataka, after training at National Police Academy, Hyderabad.

Starting from Humnabad, Suneel Kumar has served for two and half decades in various parts of the Karnataka State Police Department. He has served as SP at Kolar Gold Fields & Raichur, also as DCP (South Zone), Additional Commissioner law and order, Bengaluru City and he severed in various capacities in Karnataka.

Personal life[edit]

He is married to his IPS batch mate Archana from Maharashtra, who was also an IPS officer served in Andhra Pradesh. Hailing from a village near Nagpur, Archana was born and brought up in Mumbai. Soon after training, the two decided to tie the knot. Their son, Avishkar was born in 1993 and his wife decided to quit the service.

First Press conference as Commissioner of Police, Bengaluru City[edit]

T. Suneel Kumar after taking the charge as Commissioner of Police addressing the press conference, he said , “ I am bound to perform my duties, protecting law and order, detection of crime, protection and safety of women and clampdown on illegal activities will be core areas of policing. In coming days I hope to interact more with media. The ways and the initiatives which my predecessors have taken will be continued.”[6]

He is  very familiar with Bangalore city and the state of Karnataka in which it falls under.
