TNT Fireworks is an American pyrotechnics company. It operates small seasonal stands, larger supercenters, and also places its products in chain stores. The company serves Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Puerto Rico. It claims to be the largest distributor of consumer fireworks in the U.S.[3]
History[edit]
The business was founded in 1920 by Clyde W. Anderson when he began selling fireworks from his Florence, Alabama newsstand. It opened in 1917 to capitalize on the incoming workers who were in the city to build the Wilson Dam. The newsstand would then grow to become the bookstore chain Books-A-Million. Anderson then decided to grow the fireworks portion of his business and, in 1932, launched an advertising campaign.
Clyde's son, Charles Sr. set up his fireworks stand in 1946, at the age of 12. In 1965, Charles Sr. and Chan Fu Yu created Anco Yu Far East Co., which exported products from East Asia. In 1972, after Richard Nixon opened trade with China, Charles Sr. was invited there to source fireworks.
The TNT business name was first used on June 1, 1966. In 1968, Milton Dropo merged his companies Dixie Fireworks and Mr. Dropo's Washington Fireworks with TNT. The company started selling its fireworks in retail beginning in 1985.
From 1988 to 1990, TNT acquired several competing companies in the Western United States, giving it a larger presence there. It became incorporated in the United Kingdom in 2003, with its headquarters there in Market Rasen, Lincolnshire.[4] From 2010, the company played a large role in the legalization of consumer fireworks. The brand celebrated its centennial in 2020.[3]
Products[edit]
The brand has a variety of products in addition to its signature fireworks, including firecrackers, Roman candles, and smoke bombs.
It promotes safety and sustainability using an anthropomorphic version of its fountain-type firework Piccolo Pete.[5]
Locations[edit]
As of 2020, TNT Fireworks serves 49 U.S. states (and Puerto Rico), the United Kingdom, and Canada. Its over 5,500 seasonal stands in America are mainly open during the summer season, to provide resources for the country's Independence Day celebrations. Its supercenters, which are open year-round, number 25. The brand also puts its products in over 40,000 retail stores.[3]
