The TVD Universe (or TVDU) is an American media franchise and shared fictional universe centered on various television series airing on The CW and web series airing on CW Seed. It was developed by Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson, based on characters appearing in The Vampire Diaries novel series by L J Smith.
The first television series was The Vampire Diaries, based on the novel series of the same name. It debuted in September 2009. The universe was expanded with the spin-off series The Originals followed by the web series The Originals: The Awakening on The CW Seed. Another spin-off, Legacies, is scheduled to debut on The CW on October 25, 2018.
Development
Initially, Kevin Williamson was not interested in developing the series, finding the premise too similar to other vampire stories. However, at the urging of Julie Plec, he began reading the novels and became intrigued by the story: "I began to realize that it was a story about a small town, about that town's underbelly and about what lurks under the surface." Williamson stated that the town's story would be the main focus of the series, rather than high school. [1]
On February 6, 2009, Variety announced that The CW had green-lit the pilot for The Vampire Diaries, with Williamson and Julie Plec as head writers and executive producers. [2] On May 19, 2009, the series was officially ordered for the 2009–2010 season. [3]
The pilot episode was filmed in Vancouver, British Columbia. The rest of the episodes were filmed in Covington, Georgia (which stands in for the fictional town of Mystic Falls, Virginia), and various communities around the Greater Atlanta area [4] to take advantage of local tax incentives. The series received a full 22-episode order on October 21, 2009, following strong ratings for the first half of the season.
On January 11, 2013, it was announced that a backdoor pilot focused on the Originals, starring Joseph Morgan as Klaus, and titled The Originals, would air sometime in April for a potential series pick-up for the 2013–2014 season. On April 26, 2013, The Originals was confirmed for a full series. [5] This second spin-off would be overseen by Julie Plec, without involvement from Kevin Williamson.[6] The Originals was officially picked up by The CW on April 26, 2013, for the 2013–14 season.[7] On October 10, 2013, The CW ordered three additional scripts for the series.[8] On November 11, 2013, the CW decided to order a full season for The Originals. [9]
In August 2017, a spin-off of The Originals, focusing on Hope Mikaelson, the daughter of Klaus and Hayley, entered development. Julie Plec, creator of The Originals and co-creator of The Vampire Diaries, wrote the script and is credited with creating the series. [10] In January 2018, it was revealed that filming for the spin-off pilot would begin in the second quarter of 2018. [11] In March 2018, it was announced that the spin-off was indeed ordered to pilot, but instead of a traditional pilot, Julie Plec would present a fifteen-minute pilot presentation to The CW. It was also announced that The Vampire Diaries veteran Matt Davis would reprise the role of Alaric Saltzman. On May 11, 2018, it was announced that the spin-off, titled Legacies, was ordered to series for the 2018–19 US television season. On the same day, it was reported that Danielle Rose Russell would star as Hope Mikaelson.[12][13] In June, it was announced the series would premiere on October 25, 2018.[14]
Series
The Vampire Diaries (2009–2017)
The series is set in the fictional town of Mystic Falls, Virginia, a town steeped in supernatural history since its settlement by migrants from New England in the late 19th century. It follows the life of Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev), a teenage girl who has recently lost both parents in a car accident. She falls in love with a 162-year-old vampire named Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley). Their relationship becomes increasingly complicated as Stefan's older, mysterious brother Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) returns, planning to bring back their past love, Katherine Pierce, a vampire who resembles Elena. While Damon initially acts as the antagonist, harboring resentment against Stefan for turning him into a vampire, he later reconciles with his brother and falls in love with Elena, creating a love triangle among the three. Both brothers protect Elena as they confront various villains and threats to their town, including Katherine. The brothers' history and the town's mythology are revealed through flashbacks as the series progresses.
Additional storylines revolve around other town residents, including Elena's younger brother Jeremy Gilbert (Steven R. McQueen), her best friends Bonnie Bennett (Kat Graham) and Caroline Forbes (Candice King), their mutual friends Tyler Lockwood (Michael Trevino) and Matt Donovan (Zach Roerig), and their history teacher, vampire hunter Alaric Saltzman (Matthew Davis). The town's politics are influenced by descendants of the original founding families, known as the "Founders' Council". The founding families of Mystic Falls include the Salvatores, the Gilberts, the Fells, the Forbes, and the Lockwoods. These families primarily protect the town from vampires, though other supernatural threats like werewolves, witches, hybrids, and ghosts also exist.
The Originals (2013–2018)
The Originals, a spin-off of The Vampire Diaries, centers on three of the Mikaelson siblings: Klaus (Joseph Morgan), Elijah (Daniel Gillies), and Rebekah (Claire Holt). The Mikaelson family is called "the Originals" because they are the first vampires to ever exist. Niklaus "Klaus" Mikaelson, a descendant of a witch and a werewolf, further explores his hybrid nature in The Vampire Diaries. The backdoor pilot, which aired on April 25, 2013, also revealed that the werewolf Hayley (Phoebe Tonkin) is pregnant with Klaus's child. The series begins with the Original siblings returning to New Orleans for the first time since 1919, where a pregnant Hayley has also settled. They had originally built the city but were forced to abandon it when fleeing from their vengeful father. In their absence, Klaus's protégé, Marcel (Charles Michael Davis), took charge. Klaus plans to reclaim the city and defeat Marcel, while also protecting their city from a looming war between vampires, werewolves, and witches. The series follows the formation of new and old relationships, love, death, and the Mikaelsons' discoveries about their family history. The first season details the birth of Klaus's mystical child and the threats they must face to keep her safe. The second season covers the return of their parents and the arrival of a threatening aunt. The third season finds the Mikaelsons confronting a prophecy of their downfall and the first-sired vampires seeking revenge. The fourth season jumps ahead five years, with the Mikaelsons returning to New Orleans and confronting a resurrected ancient menace. The series concludes with its fifth and final season, seven years after the fourth, finding Hope a teenager at the Salvatore Boarding School for the Young and Gifted.
The Originals: The Awakening
The Originals: The Awakening is a webseries. The series focuses on Kol Mikaelson and his relationships with his siblings. Flashbacks to 1914 reveal Kol's quest to forge an alliance with the witches of the French Quarter. This web series provides answers to questions about Kol's past, including his rivalry with his family and his unique connection to the New Orleans witches. Each webisode is approximately two minutes long.
Legacies (2018-)
Continuing the The Vampire Diaries and The Originals storyline, the series follows the next generation of supernatural beings at "The Salvatore Boarding School for the Young and Gifted" in Mystic Falls. Klaus Mikaelson and Hayley Marshall's tribrid daughter, 17-year-old Hope Mikaelson, along with Alaric Saltzman and Caroline Forbes’ twins, Lizzie and Josie Saltzman, and other young adults, navigate their lives in an unconventional manner, learning and growing at the school.
