TV Correio (channel 12) is a Brazilian television station in João Pessoa, capital of the state of Paraíba. The station is owned by Sistema Correio de Comunicação, owned by former senator Roberto Cavalcanti, which also includes the newspaper Correio da Paraíba, TV Maior, the radio network Correio Sat and Portal Correio.

History

In February 1986, Sistema Correio implemented a retransmitter (RTV) on VHF channel 13 with the signal from the defunct Rede Manchete.[1] On March 8, 1991 (coinciding with the anniversary of the founding of João Pessoa), the Rede Manchete signal was replaced by Rede Bandeirantes, which had been absent from João Pessoa since 1987. Rede Manchete was transferred in the same year to VHF channel 5 of the recently opened TV Tambaú. With the transfer to Rede Bandeirantes, Sistema Correio decided to change the status of the station from repeater to TV generator.[1]

TV Correio went on air on December 1, 1992, as an affiliate of Rede Bandeirantes. In the first years, the TV Correio signal was limited to some municipalities that received the signal generated in João Pessoa. In this first phase, TV Correio produced some local programs such as Tony Show, Tânia Maia and Você, among others. A fire hit its facilities in July 1993, including the studio, which was unfinished as of yet. After a few months, the station began is plans to increase its coverage.[1]

In mid-1996, TV Correio installed a repeater in the city of Campina Grande on VHF channel 13 and at the same time increased the power of its station, thus forcing the station to move from channel 13 to channel 12 in order not to interfere with channels 13 in Natal (TV Ponta Negra) and Recife (TV Globo Nordeste). Still in 1996, the signal began to expand inland and the recording standard changed to Betacam Digital.

In 1997, Rede Record, dissatisfied with the poor results of TV O Norte, opted to affiliate with TV Correio. The station was off air throuchout a two-week periodd in December 1997, and joined its new affiliation on December 31.[1]

On February 26, 2021, TV Correio went off air in the morning due to heavy rain in João Pessoa. The signal was normalized at 11:40 am, temporarily transmitting Record São Paulo's feed.[2] That year, the station produced over 40 hours of local programming a week, spread across nine programs, two of which aired once a week.[3]

The station began its digital transmissions on October 24, 2011, through UHF channel 17, on an experimental basis. On February 27, 2012, the station officially launched its digital signal, and on January 21, 2013, it began broadcasting its programming in high definition.[4] On March 7, 2024, TV Correio began transmitting its signal via satellite.[5]

In compliance with federal decrees mandating Brazil's transition from analog to digital television, TV Correio—alongside other stations in João Pessoa—was required to terminate analog broadcasts on VHF channel 12 by May 30, 2018, per ANATEL's official timetable.[6]
