Tahir Qaid (October 22, 1929–July 9, 2019; Arabic: طاهر قايد), also known as Mujahid Si Abd al-Mu'min (Arabic: المجاهد سي عبد المؤمن), is an Algerian writer, translator, labor activist, and diplomat.[2][1] He is one of the founding members of the General Union of Algerian Workers, an early member of both the Algerian People's Party and the Movement for the Triumph of Democratic Liberties.

Qaid joined The National Liberation Front during the Armed Algerian Revolution. He served as Ambassador of Algeria to a number of African countries, with an impressive imprint in his prolific literature, which made him capable of French and Arabic languages.

His life[edit]

Tahir Qaid was born October 22, 1929 in the Guenzet District in Algeria.[3] He grew up in a conservative Berber Muslim family in the village of Timenkache (or Timqish), in the Guenzet District of the Sétif Province in the eastern Algerian region. He is the younger brother of the historian, Mouloud Gaïd. He grew up facing injustice and the struggle for independence. He began his education in catechism and French - Islamic schools in both Constantine and the capital. He worked as a teacher in the municipality of Tighennif, in the Mascara Province, and then in the capital just before his arrest in 1956.

Upon independence in 1962, he returned to education and trade union work for a period of one year. He was assigned a teacher of Arabic, he held the position of professor at the Hassiba Ben Bouali high school in Algiers. At the same time, he held the position of Secretary-General of the Teachers' Union and National Secretary of the General Union of Algerian Workers, in charge of mentoring.[1]

In 1963, he chose to work as a diplomat and became Ambassador of Algeria to several African countries. He also served as Director of Information and Culture at the Ministry of Information and Culture and Director of Legal and Consular Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.He retired from diplomacy and never stopped thinking and writing. He even immersed himself in politics during the era of pluralism in 1989. He was one of the founding member of the Umma Party movement led by President Benyoucef Benkhedda and members of some of his peers, such as the late Abdul Rahman Kiwan, the late Zahir Ihaddaden, Hussein Lahoul and others.

Writings[edit]

After the civil war in the early of the nineties, the Umma Party, which had been one of its theorists as the rest of the National Centrist Parties was dissolved. Qaid devote himself to intellectual work writing and translating, he wrote over 30 books in Arabic and French, some of them were published in France and some in Algeria.

He also published a great deal of articles and Islamic studies in numerous local and international newspapers and magazines in both languages.

Professor Tahir Qaid was also a traveling for lectures in cultural and educational institutions to publicize his books and intellectual products, including his book "Detailed Dictionary of Islam in French," (Arabic: muejam al'iislam almufasal bialfaransia) "Religion and Politics in Islam," (Arabic: aldiyn walsiyasat fi al'iislam) "The Basic Dictionary of Islam" (Arabic: alqamus al'asasiu fi al'iislam) and others.[4]
