Tahmena Bokhari is a Pakistani-Canadian who won Mrs. Pakistan World 2010.[1] She was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and spent several childhood years in Faisalabad, Pakistan. She won Mrs. Pakistan World 2010[2] in Toronto and became the third Pakistani woman in history to represent women on an international platform.[citation needed]


Pageants[edit]

Miss Pakistan World/Mrs. Pakistan World[edit]

Tahmena Bokhari competed in the Miss Pakistan World pageant in 2009 but did not win. She then settled down and competed in the Mrs. Pakistan World[3] competition where she won Mrs. Pakistan World[4] 2010.

Mrs. United Nations[edit]

After winning the Mrs. Pakistan World pageant she went on to compete internationally in the Mrs. United Nations 2010 pageant. On November 13, 2010 she won the title of Mrs. United Nations 2010 in Negril, Jamaica[5].

Advocacy[edit]

As a college professor, Bokhari taught social service work at Seneca and George Brown colleges.[1] She has worked as a consultant to governments and organizations, and as a public speaker and writer in the Greater Toronto Area. She focuses on diversity, women's movement, health (particularly cancer), and issues involving immigrants and settlement.[6]

Tahmena Bokhari is strong advocate of women's rights[7]. She obtained her master's in social work[8] from the University of Toronto[9] and subsequently traveled abroad, working with orphans, victims of poverty, and natural disaster survivors.[10] She worked in the relief efforts following the October 8, 2005 earthquake in Kashmir, including serving as a counsellor and translator for foreign doctors.[1]

Bokhari has worked with women´s organizations to ensure Muslim, South Asian, Pakistani and racialized women are included and that their needs are met [11]. Bokhari is a strong advocate for diversity and inclusivity as well as a trainer and consultant on these issues.[12] Bokhari has spoken about ending violence against women.[13] She had also spoken out on the 2007 murder of a young Canadian-Pakistani woman, Aqsa Parvez, which occurred in Mississauga, Ontario,[14] and has challenged the term "honour killing" popularized by the media since this murder and has says that there is never any honour in murder.[15] Bokhari has also written about the issues of violence along with other interconnected social issues in her quest to work towards social justice.[16][17]
