Take Notes is an open source text to handwriting software originally developed by Spandan Saxena and Shrish Sharma, under the development name of Aaxena Inc. later to be called One Silicon Diode. It has been available as open-source software for Android and desktop devices and supports extensibility with plug-ins.

The first version of Take Notes was released on 18 September 2020 and was named Jaguar and grew quickly popular with over 5000 downloads supporting the trend of handwritten notes during the covid pandemic.

Take Notes Panther was released on 27 September 2020 and was widely welcomed by the users which made it the top note-taking app of 2021[1] Android by Leap Droid Media London.

On that occasion, the developers released the web version of the app which they touted as Take Notes Web. Several months later Take Notes Lynx was released which made all the versions prior to that obsolete. A pre-beta version codenamed Version 45 Δ was leaked to the general public in December 2020. The One Silicon Diode team decided to release future versions themselves to avoid issues like these and maintain security. They later announced Snow Leopard which was radically different from the leaked version.

In January 2021, One Silicon Diode made Take Notes open source on Github to fix some bugs and address the security concerns raised by some of the users.

    Features

    Handwritten notes

Take Notes supports handwritten notes generation using dynamic text 1 and 2. Take Notes was one of the first widely used handwritten notes generators on Android which could create handwritten notes. It also supports PDF generation for images and volume reduction and image noise reduction across the supplied images. It also supports digital text into handwriting using an OCR which is directly built-in which decodes the text of the image to usable text for the software. Image encoding is also supported where the Android operating system allows from version Lynx and above.

    Optical character recognition

Just after installation, Take Notes scans the user's device and allows them to enable optical character recognition that accepts tables, images and texts which then divides into subparts converting them into lines and then converting them into text which could be used by the user to generate handwritten notes by applying their custom fonts. Some Android devices also support end to end cloud-based encryption for the images.

    My Notes

The My Notes section permits retrieval of user's previously created notes which are organized into an SQL database and are stored inside their devices. The user is given a confirmation for adding it to the database. Auto formatting analyses the images meta data and then the relevant context in a format of history which is called My Notes.

    Lipi

Lipi is custom typefaces that alter the overall appearance of the text provided by Take Notes graphical user interface and add certain functionality if added by custom means. Take Notes published documentation on how to create custom Lipi that could also add users own handwriting with the release of version Panther. As of 2021 there are nearly 28 custom Lipi available. The ability to use custom handwriting contributed to Take Notes' popularity early in the handwritten text area. With the increasing number of contributors on the open source software the support of more Lipi are constantly being added. The default Lipi which is applied is called ‘Just Perfect’ which is a stylized calligraphy typeface.
