Talisen Technologies Inc (also known as Talisen) is a privately-owned software firm based in Creve Coeur, Missouri specializing in energy management and aerospace and defense. Founded in 1991, Talisen has two offices based in St. Louis and Dubai. The Business Journals estimate Talisen’s revenue to be $8.7 million a year.[1]

History[edit]

Talisen Technologies Inc was founded in 1991 as Aero Tech Service Group but known as Talisen Technologies by 2002[2]. Talisen reached $3.5 million in revenue with 38 employees by 2001. The company hit $12 million in revenue in 2003 with 100 employees. [3]

Talisen acquired Consultrix, a network consulting firm, in 2002 to expand consulting services.[3][4]

In 2003, the 108th Congress held a hearing in the Committee on Small Business in the House of Representatives. Talisen was cited by Benjamin Brink, CEO of St. Louis based company Data Search Systems, as a good model of joint intelligence fusion centers.[5] This center was a project in development with Missouri's Department of Homeland Security and Boeing to evaluate terrorist threats.[4]

In 2007, Talisen Technologies was split after a merger with Mycroft Inc, a technology security company based in New York, owned by Ernest & Young LLP. This merger split created Mycroft Talisen and Talisen Technologies Inc, with the original founder George Brill taking position as CEO of Talisen Technologies Inc. Mycroft Talisen retained the computer security sector with Talisen Technologies Inc focusing on aerospace and defense, government, and facility management.[6]

In 2009, Talisen expanded into Dubai before pulling out due to the Great Recession.[7] Talisen International was formed as a division of Talisen Technologies Inc in 2015 in an attempt to reenter the Middle Eastern market. This international division debuted at the Internet of Things Expo in Dubai in early April 2016 [8]. Talisen Technologies Inc entered into a memorandum of understanding in 2017 with Etihad Energy Services Company, a venture of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority. In 2018, Etihad ESCO signed an agreement with Talisen to build a Measurement and Verification Center at Etihad’s office in Dubai Electricity and Water Authorities’ building in Dubai.[9]

Talisen Technologies Inc opened a branch in North Dakota in 2009 before dissolving the branch in 2013[10]. Other branches registered are in New York, Washington, California, and Colorado.[11]

Talisen Technologies authorized CNA Group to resell Talisen's Enterprise Sustainability Platform (ESP) in Asia in 2013. This partnership expanded the userbase of Talisen to CNA's presences in Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand, India, China, Vietnam, and Singapore.[12]

The Business Journals estimate Talisen's revenue to be $8.7 million a year with 49 employees.[1]

Software and Services[edit]

Talisen Technologies Inc has two main markets: Enterprise Energy Management and Aerospace and Defense, offering products and services in both. Energy Management involves using their Enterprise Sustainability Platform to track energy statistics and facility information for governments, health care, and schools.[13] Aerospace and Defense specializes in software for cybersecurity, communication, and supply chain management. [14]

Notable Clients[edit]

United States Army and United States Navy[edit]

In 1997, Talisen started its first year long contract for the U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Command and renewed the contract until 1999. In 1998, they started a three month contract with the Naval Air Station in Corpus Christi, TX regarding the base's supply chain.[15]

Boeing[edit]

In 2001, Talisen started contracts with aerospace and defense company Boeing. Talisen worked with Boeing's Mesa, Arizona location in projects relating to the then-recent Boeing merger McDonnell Douglas's helicopters.[15] In that year, they worked with Boeing's Long Beach, California location and Boeing's Military Aircraft and Missile Systems Company. They continued that contract into 2002.[15]

Talisen has since privately continued working with Boeing. In 2020, the Senior Vice President of Aerospace & Defense at Talisen John Stevens was interviewed with Neil Lichty, a Senior Technical Specialist at Boeing, discussing the collaboration between original equipment manufacturers and suppliers, using Talisen and Boeing's partnership as an example.[16]

United Kingdom Ministry of Defense[edit]

In 2002, Talisen provided secure communication software for the Ministry of Defense in the UK. This communication related to the development of the Future Offensive Air System to replace the Tornado GR4.[17]

New York State[edit]

New York Power Authority held a competitive bid in 2013 for the developers of the New York Energy Manager. Talisen won the bid to develop and implement the New York Power Authority's Energy Management Center.[18][19] The center in SUNY Polytechnic Institute in Albany tracks over 3,000 state government buildings[20]. This management center created the goal of reducing energy consumption in New York by 20% by 2020.[21]

Missouri State[edit]

In 2009, then-Governor Jay Nixon made an Executive Order that the agencies whose building management is controlled by the State would need to reduced energy consumption by two percent per year for ten years.[22] Talisen served as the lead for the various energy service companies working on the project.[23][24][25]

Talisen partnered with Kansas City in 2010 in a project estimated to be a $6-million-dollar budget. There was a test run of 1.3 million square footage being tracked by Talisen.[26] Talisen also expanded to track electricity consumption in the city's Health Department.[27] Kansas City's City Hall, a 76 year old building, was one of the buildings whose footprints were reduced. [28]

Awards[edit]

In 2016, Talisen's work in Kansas City was a finalist in the City on a Cloud Challenge by Amazon Web Services, competing for "Best Practices" award.[29] This project was also awarded in 2013 and 2014 by Kansas City's Environmental Management Commission.[27]

Talisen's work in New York was awarded the 2016 Grid Edge Award by Greentech Media.[18]

Talisen International was recognized by Sharjah Electricity and Water Authority for Energy Conservation in 2017.[30]

Talisen has consistently ranked in the top 25 of St. Louis's Largest Minority-Owned Businesses[1] as well as St. Louis's Largest Software Developers [31] and Web Design Firms [32] according to the St. Louis Business Journal.

Partnerships and Associations[edit]

Talisen is partnered with the American Society for Health Care Engineering (ASHE), an association for those who run health care facilities and hospitals connected to the American Hospital Association.[33] Talisen developed ASHE's "Energy to Care" Dashboard to show energy usage throughout participating hospitals and provides help desk support, tutorials, and user guides. [34][35]

Talisen Technologies regularly attends conferences regarding healthcare, energy, and aerospace and defense. One was the 2022 Middle East Facility Management Association (MEFMA) in Dubai, where CEO George Brill presented on Strategic Organizational Success.[36] Other events include include the biyearly Aerospace and Defense Supplier Summit in Seattle, Washington [37] and Intelligent Cities Exhibition and Conference in Cairo, Egypt.[38]

Talisen Technologies joined Ameren in early 2022 as a Trade Ally.[39] Ameren Trade Allies are a collection of independent businesses that offer energy-saving contracting work for companies looking to save money on energy costs.[40]

Talisen Technologies is a part of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Metropolitan St. Louis, a branch of the United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.[41] They are also a certified Minority Business Enterprise both federally and in Missouri.[15] CEO George Brill graduated from St. Louis University in 1985 and is on the university’s board of trustees.[42] Employees of Talisen Technologies can enroll in certification and training courses at a discount due to this partnership.[43]
