Tami Door is an American urbanist and businesswoman. She is the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Downtown Denver Partnership,[1][2] a place-based economic development organization in Denver, Colorado. Door was born in Flint, Michigan[3] and later moved to a rural small town community, Flushing, Michigan.[4]

Education[edit]

Door graduated from Western Michigan University in 1988 with a B.A. in Communication. She then attended Wayne State University, where she earned an M.B.A. in 1996. Door also attended the University of Oxford and the University of Michigan to complete executive strategic leadership programs.

Career[edit]

Door is best known for her leadership of the Downtown Denver Partnership (2005–present) where she has overseen the Denver’s growth,[5] focusing on place-based economic development, entrepreneurship, and inclusivity. Door is a co-founder and co-chair of Denver Startup Week[6] and a founder of The Commons on Champa.[7] Her efforts to grow Downtown Denver include designing the city for women,[8][9] building an inclusive startup ecosystem,[10] and currently, using placemaking as a vehicle for supporting businesses[11][12][13] amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Door led the organization in implementing the 2007 Downtown Area Plan,[14] a 20-year strategic plan for Downtown Denver.

Door joined the Partnership in 2005 after serving as executive vice president of the Detroit Regional Chamber of Commerce, the nation’s largest regional chamber, and as vice president supermarket banking at First Chicago-NBD Bank N.A.

Door is an internationally-recognized citybuilder, having served as chair of the International Downtown Association from 2018 until 2020[15] In 2019, she was honored as one of Denver's Most Admired CEOs by the Denver Business Journal.[16]

She has also served as chair and vice chair of the Auraria Higher Education Center Board of Directors (a gubernatorial appointment), treasurer of the Urban Leadership Foundation, co-chair of the Denver Commission to End Homelessness, and is a Board member of VISIT Denver, the Denver Theatre District, and she is a member of the Young President’s Organization. Door has also served on the Boards of Citywide Bank and the National Sports Center for the Disabled.

During her time in Michigan, Door served as Transition Executive-on-Loan for six months under Governor Granholm. She led the strategic planning for the State of Michigan History, Arts and Libraries to identify alternative funding sources and address Michigan's State budget deficit.
